I’m curious how this compares if you just drink a normal drink (ex. Bodyarmor) while working out as opposed to spitting it out. 😅

Sugar can pass through the mucus membrane under the tongue, so the carbs might actually be getting absorbed

I read somewhere that coaches in most sports make their players rinse the mouth with gatorade or other drinks mid match or when they take a breather.
They dont drink it because it would impede play because of more fluids in the body but by rinsing the mouth the brain sense carb intake and so releases energy which the players utilize during the match.

And ive tried it myself, basically gives a short boost of energy.

Hence why i believe rather than giving an outright boost to lifting it basically replenishes energy stores and allows for more exhertion.

Might as well just eat little bit of carbs before working out

I recall watching a video a few years ago where they tested this theory in a manual work environment. They had two teams, i think they were manually harvesting a sugar cane field. One side rinsed their mouth with sugar water, then spat it out. The other just had water. The sugar side cleared significantly more of the crop than the non-sugar side.

I don't think this study is conclusive. It is too esoteric and not precise enough. Like why carbs only, why not proteins. Why not chewing something instead of swishing a liquid in the mouth.
To me it's too vague to draw a conclusion but can be used as a data point (I haven't read the study yet, but if it is good then it can be a helpful data point)

Im sure I heard that in the last 6 years at some point somewhere...
And I personally feel better as well when I take a nice sip of sugary liquid, wouldnt say stronger, but fresher compared to just plain water.

I wonder if this translates to steady state cardio rather than just resistance training. Getting 10% better output over a session without extra calories would be just about on the level of magic.

Very interesting.
I'll start doing it tomorrow. But I will since with 4C lemonade for 20 seconds before each exercise instead of just once before the workout...because "gym bro science" proves that more is better.

i'm surprised they didn't compare plain water vs maltodextrin+water vs water with an artificial sweetener, would have been more interesting to see if actual sugar is the crux or just the perception of it i.e. sweetness

So if you eat a candy during workout it's the same thing? Why would you need to spit it out?

Why has no one has considered sublingual absorption of carbohydrates accounting for the difference?

Why didn't they just diguise the flavor of both drinks so that the participants had no way of knowing which was which? So long as the carb drink doesn't have some sort of distinct aftertaste that couldn't be hidden or changed, it seems like it would work.
