Lyrics:

Hey, dad, look at me
Think back and talk to me
Did I grow up according to plan?
And do you think I'm wasting my time
Doing things I wanna do?
But it hurts when you disapprove all along

And now I try hard to make it
I just wanna make you proud
I'm never gonna be good enough for you
Can't pretend that I'm alright
And you can't change me

'Cause we lost it all
Nothing lasts forever
I'm sorry
I can't be perfect
Now it's just too late
And we can't go back
I'm sorry
I can't be perfect

I try not to think
About the pain I feel inside
Did you know you used to be my hero?
All the days you spent with me
Now seem so far away
And it feels like you don't care anymore

And now I try hard to make it
I just wanna make you proud
I'm never gonna be good enough for you
I can't stand another fight
And nothing's alright

'Cause we lost it all
Nothing lasts forever
I'm sorry
I can't be perfect
Now it's just too late
And we can't go back
I'm sorry
I can't be perfect

Nothing's gonna change the things that you said
And nothing's gonna make this right again (Right again)
Please don't turn your back
I can't believe it's hard just to talk to you
But you don't understand (You don't understand)

'Cause we lost it all
Nothing lasts forever
I'm sorry
I can't be perfect
Now it's just too late
And we can't go back
I'm sorry
I can't be perfect

'Cause we lost it all
Nothing lasts forever
I'm sorry
I can't be perfect
Now it's just too late
And we can't go back
I'm sorry
I can't be perfect

My youngest son was not speaking to me for 5 or 6 years when this song came out. Hearing it for the first time brought tears to my eyes (in fact it still does) and helped me adjust my attitude toward him. While he still lives with his mother (he's 39 now) we are getting along just fine and he now has an actual job (starting out in HVAC) that he really likes- and wants to go to school to learn and excel. He always had a good heart, doesn't do drugs- maybe a beer now and then with the Old Man. Until now, he has never assumed responsibility; due in part to his mother's enabling. He finally understands why I was pretty hard on him while growing up, but my mistake was the yelling and trying to compare him to his very successful older brother. This song help us mend our relationship. Thank you Simple Plan. I am 70 now. We can move forward with acceptance, love and the realization that time waits for no one. The time is gone when I could have built him the treehouse he wanted when he was a child. Instead, we will continue to move forward with respect and love.

I grew up listening to Good Charlotte, The Used, Simple Plan, Sum 41, Billy Talent, Blink 182 and other greats. I’m 29 now and losing my hearing from a brain tumour. Probably only have a year of any left so spending the next year making sure songs like this are on lock in my head for when I can’t hear them anymore 😞.

I'm 32 years old now, and I was 14 when I used to hear Simple Plan. I have 2 baby boys, and I try so hard to be different from my parents, so they can reach this age and feel understood, welcomed and loved, the opposite from what I passed trough. SP helped me to survive teenage years, and I'm so grateful. Huge kisses from Brazil ❤

This song means a lot to me. We(me and my bros) used to listen to this back then those DVD days. Now we are just apart from each other, and we hardly talk. Pray and remember us in your prayers. ❤

This song hurts so much more after you grow up and realize your parents only wanted you to live a good life.
I'd do literally anything to go back and appreciate my parents while they were both still here.

I remember all this like yesterday..
Now, a father of 4.
O God, give me the grace to love my children with patience and encouraging support. Amen

My dad passed a few months ago. He was always My Hero but I never felt good enough. I miss you everyday dad!

This song is painful as hell if you're listening to it as an adult now. "Did I grow up according to plan?" and "Do you think I'm wasting my time doing things I wanna do?" hurts even more now.

I remember listening to this song as a teenager, it hits quite different now that I’m an adult and a father. I make sure to listen to it periodically just to remind myself of how things are for my boys. It helps me be the best father I can be, so cheers to that!

This is what music needs, diffrent topics, personal and relatable music, music that makes you feel

Damn this really does hit different as an adult. I'll be 35 this yr and I can't remember how old I was when it came out, like middle school I think. My dad's been dead for 10 yrs this yr and my life has been FAR from perfect, I just hope if he was here we would still have the good relationship that we used to.

15 years later as a dad this song hits on another level. I'm on both sides now. Going to give my kids a hug and let them know I'm proud.

I'm 37, grew up with this song and deeply felt it in high school. Now as a dad I look back to it and remember how being a kid felt and have empathy, even when my kids are being objectively ridiculous.

Ahora que soy adulto me doy cuenta lo fuerte que fue mi papá con casi la misma edad que tengo yo ahora . Yo lo veia grande pero solo era un hombre joven de 40 años, gracias papá por todo .
