On October 5, 2024 a canyoneer was descending the final rappel in Heaps Canyon using a Hydrobot rappel device. The final rappel is well over 180 feet and it is known that additional friction must be added to control one's speed as they get closer to the ground. Without an official determination of what actually happened, it appears that the individual may have attempted to add additional friction but his attempts caused the device to lost contact with the ropes and he then fell to the ground. In watching your video it appears to me that this device should never have been used for a rappel of this length without preplanning to add friction in some way to assist the device in controlling the man's descent. It is tragic that someone had to lose their life in this manner.
