Yess 👍 great strategy! Another thing you can do on top of this is plant native flowering plants nearby that aphid eating insects such as hoverflies and parasitoid wasps pollinate in their adult stage. Yarrow is my top pick for this since it brings in a ton of them and it native to basically the whole northern hemisphere. So in this way, not only are you providing a free trap crop for the aphids, you are helping to build up the populations of the insects that naturally control them.

Sound advice. My wife has her flowers sitting on the deck. Just went to pull some weeds nearby and they were covered with aphids. Left the weeds alone and I'm sure the flowers will appreciate it.

I found a wild vine (not sure what type) that was covered in Aphids right beside my tomato plant last year. I pulled the vine out and stomped on the Aphids. Now looking back maybe I should have kept the vine like you did here because my tomato had none. Could have been why. Great idea and will experiment in the future if it should happen again!

I have not yet mowed the pasture this year which is unusual. Could this be the reason my garden has been healthy this year (so far anyway). There are a lot of 'weeds' and wildflowers all around the garden area. I've also noticed an abundance of butterflies as well.

I use to plant yarrow on the perimeter of my 3 acres and would burn them aphids - reduced the population and gave me time to develop enough polyculture to balance them out. For me the challenge was that the bad critters show up first, and feast for a few years while I built a strong enough ecosystem to control them. What I found from a lot of error is that down in eastern NC in zone 8 it takes a pretty densely planted plot with a lot of variety to achieve what you want naturally.

How's that mulberry tree looking since the pruning?

Having wood chips in your garden can balance excess nitrogen that attracts aphids and provides a home for predator spiders.
