The Devastating Human Cost of Ethiopia's Forgotten War: Over 600,000 Lives Lost - and for what?
Показать описание
The Tigray conflict in northern Ethiopia has resulted in one of the worst humanitarian crises the world has seen in years. The conflict began in November 2020 when Ethiopia sent its military into Tigray in an attempt to subdue the rebellious regional government. The neighboring country of Eritrea also sent troops into Tigray, leading to massacres of civilians, destruction of hospitals and clinics, and an exodus of refugees.
According to a report by researchers from Ghent University in Belgium, up to half a million people have died from war and famine in Tigray. The estimate includes 50,000 to 100,000 victims of direct killings, 150,000 to 200,000 starvation deaths, and over 100,000 additional deaths caused by a lack of health care. The death toll in Tigray is poorly documented, as humanitarian workers were banned from bringing cameras into the region and continue to be threatened with expulsion if they speak out.
The conflict has led to a shortage of food and fuel, resulting in most families in Tigray resorting to begging, cutting meals, or selling their harvest to pay off their debts. The vast majority of Tigray is considered “hard to reach” or “highly restricted,” with most humanitarian agencies forced to suspend or drastically reduce their operations due to the lack of food and fuel aid. Unlike other conflicts, the Tigray conflict has not led to international sanctions or votes of condemnation in the UN General Assembly.
