Its actually the new style that everyone is doing. Players are looking to push the ball for further distance rather than the over the head to shoot over defenders in the post and midrange. Its the 3 point era.

That used to be called shooting from the hip and considered weak. Jumpers in the old days had to be released above ear level at the very least.
