Hollywood Actors Who Fought in World War II | Celebrities Who Served in the Military

Hollywood is full of talented and influential people... who, when they're not changing the world or making millions, like to go out there and fight for their country. Whether it's through service in the armed forces or other volunteer organizations, celebrities are out there working in their community and their countries.

At the beginning of World War II, more than one hundred and fifty Hollywood actors volunteered to enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces. Many volunteers were turned down on account of their health, age or "for undisclosed reasons." Yet many big name celebrities managed to get selected and served in the military. Many actors, actresses and musicians joined the armed forces in the war effort of World War II.

Hollywood is always glorified and celebrated and it's a good idea to be reminded that many actors were willing to put their lives on the line for us. The list of Hollywood Actors Who Fought in World War II is a long one. For whatever reason, more actors than many other industries rushed to sign up when America entered the war. Still, only some of them actually made it into the theatre of war — unfortunately.

More often than not, those Hollywood types who did see combat were publicity hounds who never actually fired a shot in anger. Not so for Audie Murphy, James Arness, Jimmy Stewart and other celebrities who served in the Military and whose stories are briefly outlined here.

This is the first of a series about famous Hollywood Actors Who Fought in World War II. This video will provide interesting tidbits on the war-time contributions of classic Hollywood stars you may have never heard of before. These are Veteran Celebrities who served in the military but did not make a lot of headlines while they served, but they nevertheless served with distinction and deserve to be remembered.

Not everyone is brave enough to live their life full of confidence because it requires some amount of motivation. The most important and easiest way to bring out someone's bravery is just to appreciate them in whatever the work they are doing and boost them up.

Lee Marvin was not on Guadalcanal, he fought and was wounded on Saipan, Charles Bronson was not a B29 Gunner, he was a B24 Gunner and was wounded flying a mission over the Philippines, not mainland Japan. Clark Gable was in the Army Air Corps but was stationed-Assigned to a Combat Film-Camera Unit, he did qualify as a Gunner, and participated on a couple Bombing missions over Europe.

Fun fact: One time Audie Murphy had an argument with his director over getting one of Audie's old pals a badly needed job on their movie. Finally fed up, Audie gave the director a death glare ... and the guy basically resigned on the spot! "Oh my God, " he went, "Audie's killed over a hundred men who were trying to kill him, and the worst thing I've ever done is run over a cat in my own driveway! I'm dead!"

gotta question your characterization of Morgan Freeman having "fought in world war 2", as he was only 8 years old when it ended. by that same logic, i'm a viet nam vet because i enlisted in USAF 6 years after the end of THAT war.
also a pretty long stretch to say that Bob Hope "fought" as he was never in the military. might have done a lot for morale, yes, but "fought"? not so much.

Clark Gable served with the 351st Bombing Group in Polebrook England back when it was the United States Army Air Corp. Never saw anything about him in Italy. He made some movies promoting the war and even went on some bombing missions in B-17’s over Germany. He qualified as a waist gunner on the Flying Fortresses. Gable was a favorite actor of Hitler and he offered a prize to anyone that brought Clark Gable to him intact.
