So the FDA's official position is "The FDA research also shows that rinsing rice before cooking has a minimal effect on the arsenic content of the cooked grain and will wash off iron, folate, thiamine and niacin from polished and parboiled rice."

Bonus pro tip: try to rinse your rice in a separate container instead of the cooking one. The swirling rice starts to scratch and remove the non-stick coating inside, and those things are expensive (if not impossible) to replace. Especially true if you own one of those pricier pro cookers. Zojirushi hype!

Rinsing rise is really optional if you're in developed countries like the US and Europe wich rice is cleaned and removed of dust and dirt but some countries don't have the equipment so their rice have more dirt and dust compared to other countries

Studies have shown that rinsing your rice has nothing to do with removing arsenic. It makes no difference. Just research where your rice comes from and if there's a high arsenic in that price production

What?! Arsenic?! Where did that come from? And only 30% removed?! Never heard of this. Are you sure? Where are your stats?

Basmati rice has the lowest levels of arsenic, and it smells sooo good straight out the bag. Yes I still will give it a soak for a few minutes twice before cooking.

As @grimsooth points out, the FDA disagrees, and apparently rinsing washes away nutrients. Watching @aragusea's video"Is washing rice really still necessary?" he shows that cooking rice in a lot of water and draining is a better way to reduce arsenic.

Washing doesn't reduce heavy metals content, but you may want reduced starch. Depending on the supply chain, there is more or less dust. The way to physically reduce heavy metals is to boil it and strain it, like pasta, a completely different cooking method to normal. You can also choose areas with low heavy metals, and low pollution. If youre in the US, California has very low levels of Arsenic.

I actually heard that just pre washing your rice has a minimal effect on removing arsenic. The best way to remove arsenic in rice is to boil your rice in a lot of water and then drain it "pasta style"

Surprised to see the salty comments. This is common sense for literally billions of people around the world.

I don't understand the removal of 'excess starch'; isn't the rice made up entirely of starch?

The best way to remove arsenic from rice is actually that infamous boil+drain method; yes, like pasta.

Rice washing doesnt do much regarding the arsenic content. There are official studies made for that. We should always inform ourselves before telling other people “facts” that are not quite true. Washing rice is not healthier. ALL depends on what type of dish you are trying to make and result you want to achieve.
Asian cuisine requires washed rice for a specific reason that’s true and accurate. BUT there are OTHER recipes around the world that actually SPECIFICALLY tell you to NOT wash the rice because you need that extra starch.

Also… the “dirt” thing depends on what’s the source you are getting your rice from. 🧐👍🏼 Peace ✌️

Guys just rinse your rice 2 to 3 times to remove any dust/dirt/ extra starch…this is being done from 100’s of years in India and different parts of Asia. Infact they cook rice and strain the extra liquid away..removing extra starch. So low in starch..low GI to
