Why I Left California and Moved Out of Los Angeles

After 15 years in California, I moved out of Los Angeles, California, and I left for the suburbs of Denver, Colorado to transform the way we lived. In this video, I share why we left Los Angeles and California, what made us decide to move, how our lives have changed in 2020, and the pros and cons of moving to Colorado from California.

I was born in California and still love a lot of things about my home state, but after a while, it stopped making sense for us. It didn't fit our lifestyle and financial goals anymore. After moving out of California, we were able to pay off over $80,000 of debt, buy two houses, and put ourselves on the path to financial independence.

Leaving California was one of the best decisions of my adult life, so if you've been thinking of making the move yourself in 2020 or beyond, I hope this video helps. If you like this video or learn something new, please subscribe or share it with a friend!

If you're working on becoming debt-free, here are some other videos where I share our story.

6:10 Truer words have never been said. But, as much as I miss SoCal, I love it in CO.

6:20 Diversity is probably the most important to me. I can't live in a city being the only minority, quality of life is very important. Sure saving 30% on rent sounds good, but in exchange, I get a lack of food choices, lack of diversity, and unpredictable weather. I'll probably run back to Cali with the homeless. If Colorado does it for you, that's all that matters. Congrats on your move.

Can’t agree more. You nailed it all on this video. I thought Denver food scene wasn’t too bad (I was there last year) but for sure nowhere near the great options at Asian cuisines in CA. That should inspire to cook at home to save $$ with healthier meals.

Yep! I did the same thing in 2009. I left Fresno, CA for Eastern Colorado. I lived in a very small town for 2 years there, then moved to the South.

Financially smart to move. Too many have the “Movin to LA to become Famous” dream. Same is happening in
Las Vegas.

Congrats. I grew up in Westwood and now live quite close to Culver City in Midcity (I shop at Culver City Trader Joe's). LA is a great place, if you can sort out your housing. But Denver is nice. You get a lot of home for your money. And you can always visit.

My guess is your parents or you wife’s parents live in Cerritos. Yes lots of Asians go to USC/UCLA live in the westside then realize OC is good for kids. But it’s too expensive, competitive and materialistic. Cerritos is a good medium between LA/OC. Did you go to Whitney?

Love the anecdotes about the lack of diversity! Especially being confused for an asian person on a television commercial! That person was at least making an effort to be friendly! Anyways diversity is a bit relative. I grew up in Kansas and Denver & it’s suburbs are way more diverse in comparison!

Did you look into Northern Arizona at all?

That's surprising re lack of diversity. I've always heard Denver / Boulder is a good mix. Good to know

From what I have been told about Denver, Colorado will be California in 10 yrs. because of all the Californians moving there.

If you leave California, remember why you left and vote Republican.

Of course you lived on the west side. Ditto South OC. 😴 Bougie and boring.

Don't come to AZ. Too expensive now. We lived in Monrovia.

Thank for leaving California.. let's make the local government from that place KNOW what they're doing wrong to their people. 👌

I moved to Oregon from California as an adult after several years in the military and have been to many countries across the globe. Diversity is overrated. Find a good neighborhood and enjoy your blessings. Don't let your own bias keep your dreams from coming true.

You moved to someone else's pond. Don't expect them to change. I don't miss California outside of family. I wish more Californians would leave but I am glad they don't.
