The HP TouchPAd, is the latest entry into the Tablet wars we find ourselves in. This is the first webOS tablet, running WebOS 3.0 from HP, its got a 9.7" touchscreen, powered by a dual core 1.2Ghz processor. Also has a 1.3MP front facing camera for video chat (no rear camera). It does come in 16GB & 32GB Wi-Fi options for $499 & $599 respectively.

Hardware

The TouchPad is all black in glossy finish, which makes it a fingerprint nightmare. The devices does have some weight to it, with one physical button on the face of the device. On the right hand side it has a volume rockr and a slot that slides out to reveal you device serial number(Why?). No rear camera and no expandable memory.

The Glossiness of the design does make it hard to grip and you tend to find yourself resting your hold of the TouchPad constantly. Also the design is a little bulky, though the TouchPad looks slim or slender, it feels like it was design for discomfort with no clear holding form built into its design and its overall glossy finish takes away from the the systems feel

WebOS

WebO 3.0 has a very familiar feel as to the other versions of WebOS. The questions here is does it work well for a tablet? Answer is yes and no. That's where are the frustration begins with the Touchpad. There are times when using the Tablet it feels refreshing and there is simple ease of use. Like the accounts feature, once you added all you email accounts in. the corresponding chat features like yahoo chat and Google talk are automatically added to you IM app. (Except for Skype, it just didn't work for me).

Then there are times where the software fights with you, you get freezes, have to tab a button a couple of times before it responds. I have even had it restart on me twice. Now I don't know if the problem is software or hardware related. But WebOS 3.0 clear runs slower on the Touchpad

Conclusions

There are some things to like about the TouchPad. WebOS feels like a full featured operating system. They are enough apps available in the market to get you started. But they are also numerous negative aspect of the device that set it back. The device runs slow, can be irresponsive at times, battery life during my use was 6hrs(without watching a movie on the device). Unit ran very warm during use. HP had a clear shot at tackling Apple's dominance with the TouchPad but it seems the may have missed the mark at launch. Lets hope most the these issues can be remedied with a software upgrade. Till then I would have to set aside the TouchPad for something else.

@fat4laty72 The TouchPad is $99 now if you can find one off HP or Bestbuy. and at that price you can't go wrong with it

@TheRaceforTech yep, its a shame, a lot of wasted potential

@TheRaceforTech poor hardware build, terrible marketing and disadvantaged price point, plus the fact that HP didn't really need to kill it off

@TheRaceforTech Nah, it just gets bashed because it doesn't have an Apple logo on the back. Oh well, I still love it and think it is a great device. You really have to go out there and test it for yourself. Don't let somebody else make a decision for you.

@darrrienk On average its about 9 hours. But....it varies. If your watching a lot of videos it can be anwhere form 6 to 8. and If your just browsing every so often its about 10 hours. :)

@booredatwork You mean the outer hardware is a waste of potential, not the inner hardware with 1.2 GHZ (overclocked b/w 1.5 to 1.99 GHZ) dual core snap dragon processor, beats audio technology, touchstone technology coil, and the touch-to-share coil right? (Android and iOS don't have these features) Plus, this review is a little old because the software was recently updated to webOS 3.0.2.68 the other day. It's not super GPU accelerated (coming soon) but still a lot faster than 3.0.0.

Hi I have a HP touchpad 32GB. Converted into Android 4.4.4. KitKat. I was working good. Suddenly some of the Keys and menu bar options when it work in Horizontal position, it does not work in Vertical position. I was told by hp service engineers to replace the Touch Screen. Replaced and still it is in the same condition. Then I tried to Install webos doctor, to reinstall WesOs, could not install it. appearing a triangle in yellow colour andin the exclametery  (!) symbol in the middle. it is totally freezes, What to do how to resume it. How to install WEBOS back in HP Touchpad.
Your response is highly appreciated.
