"..most organizations use packaged software for non-strategic applications.." - what about packaged software that is customizable through configuration and extensible with custom add-ins? I know of a case where such software product is used and the whole solution is strategic. I would love to see/hear comments on that. Thank you

If many people do BA without knowing it and without studying it, then why do we have or would we need professional BA's? That lowers the norm instead of uplifting it. A Business Analyst is an expert and Business Analysis is a professional discipline and it takes years of study and experience. Of course, everybody can cook an egg, but not everybody is a cook or chef.
