Btw, unfollow *anyone* who says references are cheating. Thats some toxic art advice, and they’re probably lying that they don’t use references.

One tip I'd like to add is...
"Don't be afraid to use straight lines too"

Newcomers are often told to keep their lines curvy and flowy in order to make their artworks look dynamic, I got caught up in this mentality and drew a bunch of spaghetti lines without real shape or whatsoever lol
Now after implementing straights into my sketching process it has been a joy to give form to different objects.

Something I wish I knew earlier is that understanding anatomy and how basic shape making a body takes time. You won't understand it overnight. I have been drawing on and off for 10+ years, and many different things have click with me over the years to help me understand. Drawing takes time. Don't measure your progress against someone else. Draw because you want to. Because you love it. It's fine. Enjoy your growth and have fun creating.

these are fantastic lessons. I'm self taught mostly but went to art school for a few years (dropped out for medical reasons). This is the kind of stuf they teach you in life drawing classes. One tip id add to gesture drawings is finding "the line of the shoulders"and "the line of the hips"" then connecting them with "the line of the spine". this REALLY helps get the initial pose down before even worrying about 3D space, muscles etc. Makes sure you stay focused on the main flow of a pose.

im a baby beginner artist trying to teach myself to draw....not like a 5 year old lol. Sometimes i do feel overwhelmed with where to even begin or what to even study first - What should I spend more time on, i feel like im not improving, or not understanding something. I love the advice you provided - especially about learning how to draw basic shapes & using references! Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge with us - just subscribed. Look forward to watching more of your videos!!

the imagination vs reference bit is pretty real, and its hard to explain without misleading people who aren't at your level yet. I draw a lot from imagination (and nowadays I'm feeling it's limitations, so theres that), and this wows people who think it's the "endgame", which I suppose it is, but you need to use reference, memorize what exists, etc, to get to the point of drawing from imagination in the first place.

This is something my old teachers failed to teach me: how to draw anatomy and gesture drawings using basic shapes. Thank you so much for this. You're a better teacher than they ever were!

Just found your channel today. It’s great to see folks acknowledge how important drawing from references are even when others say they shouldn’t. Life is a reference imo. Great video dude.

This helps a lot. I'm 16 and have been drawing for 5 years. I've never had anyone teach me anything when it comes to art. I've also never looked at vidoes for help, and I've always been disappointed that the people i drew never looked like people, but after binging your vidoes i realized how much i needed to start looking for help.

As a relatively beginner artist, one thing I've only recently realized is that "drawing from imagination" and "drawing from reference" are not a binary distinction, but a continuum. The way many art channels talk about the two ("draw from reference so that you can learn to draw from imagination") made me believe that drawing from reference is just the boring learning phase where you have to get the reps in, and eventually you learn enough to be able to draw what you actually want to draw from imagination. But I now realize that it doesn't have to be like that. You can draw from imagination, but use the reference to guide you with the parts you're unsure about or where you feel like something is off in your drawing. That realization and the hybrid approach have already boosted my learning by a lot (because I have a really hard time motivating myself to just do pure "boring practice").

So happy to see these art help videos over the past 10+ years be more and more supportive of using references. In the 00's it was a taboo subject.

I started learning to draw about 2 months ago and since then I have been looking on the internet for someone to learn from and you turn out to be the most inspiring person. Pls do more!

I think the basic shape tip is the most important for beginners or intermediate artists who feel that their work just isn't satisfying them. I'd go even further and say that they should practice simple lines and master those in order to master shapes, then forms, then gesture or humans or objects

Great video, man. Especially the last tip really resonated with me, I used to focus on anatomy so much that I hit a point where my old drawings looked better than my new ones, even though they had far less structure to them. The importance of a balance between construction and gesture, and sometimes even going with a more fun angle or pose even though it isn't fully realistic helped me a lot. Finding the rhythms, making sure it still "makes sense" but not getting too hung up on it.

You've actually laid out fundamental advice so simply. You hit the nail on the head with every point. Couldn't agree more.

I appreciate your channel so much. I’m picking up the pen again after years of only doodling now and then. Seeing your progress of a year or whatever is inspiring and the things you say resonate a lot with me - nothing that hadn’t been said before, but since you’re comparatively “fresh” you have a very beginner friendly angle to those things.
