Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People? | His Grace

Brock worked hard to support his family. And when his career took off, he felt like he had life by the tail—until the day the car he was in was struck by a large truck. In an instant, his life changed dramatically, leaving him to wonder why bad things happen to good people.

In his frustration and anger, Brock sought to understand. He’d never wanted to be poor. He’d worked hard to build a successful career, and to have it taken away—by someone who chose to text and drive—was hard.

After questioning God, Brock became a changed man. The accident robbed him of his financial security and a career he loved, but it softened him. His relationship with Jesus Christ and his compassion for the suffering of others grew.

Brock sees the evidence of God’s love for him not in monetary success or in the good or bad things that happen, but in his children’s love and his wife’s kindness. Brock’s hope in Christ teaches him there are good things to come.

Why do you think God allows bad things to happen to good people?

"Had I not faced what I've faced, I wouldn't know him like I know him today." The same words of gratitude I use as well.

I’m 31. I’m 15 brain surgeries in, had an emergency hysterectomy 2 weeks ago, chronic pain due to nerve damage and medical mistakes, no children, single, survivor of childhood sexual abuse at the hands of a missionary, and in major medical debt. To say that I needed this an understatement. All of those things have happened to me, but I refuse to let them define my story. The ONE constant in my life is Christ. When my testimony of the church dwindled I was left with the love Christ has for me. I still don’t plan on going back to church, but I will never ever be able to deny that He is my savior and redeemer and that his love for me is beyond any humanly measure.

When I was in Germany on a mission in the '60's I had one landlord who was a survivor of Auschwitz (complete with number tattooed on his forearm). He had lost his wife and family in the Holocaust. He cooked us lunch one day and then asked us this question, "Why do bad things happen to good people?" At age 20 I did not know that this was a question that philosophers had grappled with for thousands of years. I was also not old enough to have experienced anything really "bad." I gave him the best answer I could..."they happen as a test...testing whether despite it all we will choose HIM." He seemed quite satisfied with that answer. But discussing this with him as tears streamed down both of our faces was a never-to-be-forgotten experience. But, in the end, our discussion ended up saying exactly what Brock has told us in this video. Now I am 75 and have experienced "bad" things...the sudden and unexpected death of two successive wives, loss of job, loss of virtually all material possessions. But I did choose HIM and at this point in my life am happy and whole.

In 2010 my wife and I also had to face a great challenge: saying farewell to our youngest daughter - she was nine - and something that helped me get through was WRITING. I wrote a book in her tribute, in Portuguese. If you want a free copy, please let me know. ;-)

To endure and understand suffering as this man has done, is to draw closer to and become more like God. When we are acquainted with the 'theology of suffering' that an unfragmented gospel teaches, the world's woes and tragedies have purpose and we can then begin to understand why bad things happen to good people. A great talk that explores this idea: Francine R. Bennion's 'A Latter-day Saint Theology of Suffering'

Wow! Amazing testimony only people that go through indescribable difficult situations like that can attest to. Very touching. Thank you for sharing. Thank Heavenly father and his Son Jesus Christ because in them we find hope in this world and in the one to come.

"Had I not faced all that I had faced, I would not know Him like I know Him today." I know from personal experience how very true that statement is. We are still going through "it" hoping deliverance will come. Thank you for sharing your story.
