It's actually amazing the difference between tasks for this knot...

My father used this all the time and I learned it from him...but in the same way you do it an often for vertical tensioning tasks, like tying down a roof or trailer.

But these days I find myself doing more outdoorsy stuff like camping and suddenly all these useful knots I've used all my life make almost no sense when tied _horizontally_

Sorry that is not a truckers hitch because you tie the loop into a knot. It works for you and that's ok, but if you tried that technique tying off a serious load you'd have difficulty untying your loop knot.
