I own a 73 Corvette L-48 4-Speed and had before a 79 Corvette L-82 4-Speed. I will take an L-48 any day over an L-82. Yes the L-82 puts out more horsepower but it puts out less torque. L-82 has low axle gear ratio 3.70:1 therefore it will not develop peak horsepower and torque until your going 50 mph + and on the freeway at 75 mph the L-82 will rev way too high almost 4, 000 rpm. The L-48 produces more low end torque and is lightning quick off the line. L-82 off the line are sluggish and slow. Until your going 50 mph or faster its not very impressive. Yes I know the L-82 has extra performance items (slightly higher compression ration, higher lift camshaft, slightly larger valves, four bolt main crank), but the L-48 has faster acceleration. There's a reason GM made the L-48 from 1968 to 1980 because it was a very well engineered engine for reliability and dependability. Compared to the L-82, the L-48 is easier to start and has a smoother idle.
