Welcome to my channel How to Knot and in this video, I will be showing you how to tie a running bowline. This knot can be used in applications such as camping, climbing, sailing, and general purposes. This knot has quite a few benefits such as being easy to untie when exposed to a load, grips tightly, easy to slide, strong, and secure. Typically used by sailers to retrieve items when they have fallen overboard, but can also be used by climbers to hoist objects.

Start by creating a loop.

Then a bight as well.

Pass the working end under the standing part.

Feed it back through the loop.

Wrap the working end around the rope and then feed back through the loop.

Dress and tighten.

I have learned that Iron Workers use a running bowline, but they called it "bowline". I was on a job working with a group of iron workers as part of composite crew. I am a different trade. We were affixing taglines prior to rigging an object. I tied a traditional bowline. They told me what I tied isn't a bowline. I was puzzled because I did not tie it wrong. But I watched them, and they tied a bowline with the loop opposite-as the running bowline appears in comparison to the traditional bowline-None of them elaborated or explained it to me at the time, just called me dumb lol. I realized they use a 'running bowline' but call it a 'bowline', and use this running bowline because it has several advantages: it gets cinched tight under tension (like a choker hitch), and then loosens easily when not under tension. Thus a rigging focused tradesman would prefer the running bowline.
