Judy Garland met aspiring actor Mark Herron in early 1964. She was 41, he seven years younger, so when he moved into her Brentwood home, many assumed he was just using her. But he was charming, cultured and incredibly patient and he saved her life by getting her to hospital after her ill-fated Australian tour.

They were married in Las Vegas the following year after her divorce from Luft came through, but by then she was using opiates and her mood swings had become extreme –she would spend days slumped in bed followed by days of restless pacing, phoning those who would still take her calls at all hours. She demanded unwavering attention and when Herron did not show it she could be petty and malicious, throwing his clothes in the swimming pool one time and claiming that he was aggressive. Luft was a scrapper and gave as good as he got, but Herron was a gentler soul who after five months had had enough, returning to his long-time partner and rarely speaking about their relationship.

God rest her soul! She gave the world so many beautiful ❤ memories. And like many of us had marriages that didn't last.

Some fragile souls need a way to prop up their self esteem and drugs give that momentary happiness.

Vincent Minnelli was gay. Mark Herron was gay. She seems to be falling in love with the wrong man.

Herron's longtime partner was Henry Brandon, a German-born actor everyone here has seen as the handsome bohemian nudist teacher in "Auntie Mame."
