📖 For a lot of people black holes and string theory were topics that were filed in the mental box labelled ‘things I will never be able to get my head around”. However, all changed when Neil deGrasse Tyson began appearing on TV screens.

I will never change my mind. Immortality is the best thing!

I am a huge admirer of Neil, and I really loved the things he said here... but still, I have to disagree with his point of view.
I don't see how our lives could be less valuable because we stop aging. In the case of the plastic flower, it doesn't have much value because it's simply not as beautiful and doesn't smell like the real one, and not because it's "inmortal".
In our case, I think our lives will be MUCH more valuable when being alive would mean that we will have the oportunity to discover every single mistery of the universe, travel to other galaxies, transform our own species for the better many times, etc... we will be much more meaningful when we realize that we will still be here in 100.000 years, because we will care more about the future, about how we treat others and about just doing what we love instead of doing what we have to in order to survive (like accepting to have a shitty job because you need the money to feed your family and yourself, for example).

Knowing you’re going to die 4:53 is not enough reason to not want to live as long as you can ! Death is awful, not a blessing! It’s not necessary and it should be only for those that want to die. Most people who have the means to live don’t worry about death. Because their lives are limitless. It’s only the poor and less fortunate that worry about death !

I think people value flowers as a gift because they are REAL FLOWERS and not because they will die eventually. I PROMISE if I could develop an immortal rose, I'd beat Elon Musk in the race to become the first trillionaire LOL

We need him to live forever to help us along.

I think your reasoning is off- when you give a bouquet of flowers, they were live UNTIL you cut them. you are giving a gift of something beautiful, but it is dead. How long you can keep them under the illusion of still being alive is one way of showing how much you appreciate the fact that they were alive. Appreciating and respecting life (our natural planet that created us, ) is what gives meaning to being alive

I mean honestly I want to choose to die when I'm ready. Like a vampire where I don't have to worry about aging and getting weaker.

I disagree with most of Neil’s points most importantly that death gives life meaning I don’t do shit now and I probably won’t be living forever

I find neil answer interesting, on the other hand why does it have to be the scenario, if living forever was an option . It should be embrace, theres should be no need to justify death at that point

Sounds like we will be merging into the Warhammer 40k universe in the future

It doesn’t matter how long you live, but how good you live. Ray Charles.

He miss the point about living forever as there s nothing about this if we reach lev.
Reaching lev means you won t die from aging.
He talked about being hit by a bus and after about not dying..that s a contradiction.
What would happen in an ageless world is avoiding the suffering of aging, years after years of painful declining, the plenty of diseases associated with senescence who makes somebody to want to die.
For sure death would still be there from non aging cause so the argument of life without death has no point.

1:10 Clearly Neil does not understand how increasing life *expectancy* works. Because how would we "achieve escape velocity from death" when we increase life expectancy by just one year but not when we increase it by 10 or 20 years? Life expectancy is not a countdown timer like in the Justin Timberlake movie In Time; it's just an expression of statistics and probabilities across a wide range of people.

We just need to figure out how to teach urgency to immortals. I do believe there will be those that are naturally curious enough to still see the importance of the pursuit of knowledge in a reasonable amount of time.

Immortality is a gift from God and we can discover that gift with technology and a purity of Goal ❤❤❤

The plastic flower analogy is a false one. There are immortal jellyfish that are just as intriguing and meaningful as regular jellyfish.

That we will live forever is not a foregone conclusion. Secondly, unless someone changes our species, then I do not see a logical basis for saying that the lifespan of our species has ever changed. I think that someone would have to change the species in order to do that. Average life expectancy in the US reflects many things. Historically, the largest would be infant mortality. In 1800, 50% of the population died before they were 5. That had a really big impact on average life expectancy. There is disease, and wars, and medical technology.
We have evidence to support that people who live in glacial runoff areas commonly live to be over 100, possibly due to getting all of the minerals they need. That said, maybe they exhibit the real life expectancy of humans, when not dying prematurely, like the rest of the world. Eh?

People live to be 80 because they= can eliminate childhood diseases. People will live to be 100 but we are still limited to 120 years. There was a time when people did not age and they lived to be 1, 000.
