Biden apologizes for forced Native American boarding school policy

President Joe Biden delivered an apology for a United States policy that forcibly separated generations of indigenous children from their families for more than 150 years and sent them to federally backed boarding schools for forced assimilation. Mike Memoli reports on what lead to this apology and how it may help Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign.

Canada has a similar history. We issued our apology a few years ago, but still have some way to go making up for what our government did to them.

In both countries, the Catholic church’s complicity was central to the whole thing. The Pope apologized for that a couple of years ago.

Canada also has the nasty legacy of Residential Schools. In 2008 our Prime Minister issued an official Apology AND set up funding to help our Indigenous Peoples get counseling along with water services and better housing. We have had a National Day of Reconciliation for about 6 years which celebrates the character and contribution of Indigenous peoples to our society. We acknowledge that we are living on treaty land. Canadians are, generally speaking, learning more about colonization and its consequences. Thankfully there is more healing in native communities and more non-Indigenous people are getting tuned in! It's a long, multi-generational process. Well-worth it.

A dear friend of mine who was born around 1910 in Oklahoma told me she remembered the Baptist missionary wagons going out and rounding up all the Indian children. I know there was a graveyard next to the Indian Mission they took them to, a big two-story building, both school and dormitory. No one knows what happened to the graveyard or the building. I always wanted to know and couldn't find any information. 😔

I can't believe people, especially Native people, are falling for a photo op. Screaming angrily that you're making a FORMAL isn't what constitutes a formal apology. Where's the official written statement by the federal government outlining how and what wrongs were committed, and stating unequivocally that said government perpetrated horrendous evils????

We have Native American in our background. And, A Native American family member.

But, if he is feeble how can he manage? His Administration has ruin our country.
How about reparations for Native Americans and their history be taught in schools?
