How to: IMPROVE your ART (Mistakes to Avoid)

When I was learning to draw as an absolute beginner, there were loads of mistakes I made which I really wish I could go back and undo. Avoid these and you’ll improve your art faster. How do I sum that up in internet talk? Maybe - “Don’t make these mistakes and your art will be 100000% better”.

I'm so glad I learned to draw using shapes rather than lines. It has helped me so much, just looking at a reference and thinking of what shapes can be used helped me so much when I was a beginner

The fruit analogy really opened my eyes to what I need to do for study pieces. I'm usually a perfectionist when it comes to my pieces but I just need to loosen up for what I want to work on. Thanks!

Yeah the second one describes me a whole bunch 😂. I look for that one video or brush that gonna make art a lot better than it is. I’m getting better at using observation and the tools on my software tho to get it to look like how I want it

The first tip was a bit of a long winded way to say study from reference and commit to muscle memory, but learning from "how to draw" videos aren't inherently mistakes if someone follows them. A lot of pro artist have already been there and done that, right? It's good for students to learn from an artist who knows what they're doing. Someone will pick up and learn from how the artist teaches. One of the things I also don't agree with is the emphasis on "you won't find your own style". Style comes when the understanding of the fundamentals is solid. At that point, is when a mid level artist starts collecting from other artist. If they like the way one artist draws eyes, they take that. Another one paints in a certain way, they borrow that. I suggest reading the book "Steal like an artist."

Here's a mistake a lot of beginner artists make: not flipping their canvas horizontal to find mistakes.

Some great points. Really liked the structured practice rather than full pictures. It's funny, but so many skills I've learned I ahve done that way, but we never think about that for art!?

Keep making tutorials please! Would love to see more.

Fantastic video! The only time I would say brushes matter is if you're doing backgrounds that both look nice and don't take an insane amount of time reaching that level of quality, within reason. I used to have to spend forever getting the right blending and texture for a grassy field for example. Using the stock first brush brush for that kind of work is hell because it's just a circular dot.

Now in my professional works I use about 8-15 brushes depending on the piece. It really streamlines the process for me. However I also spent years and years only using the 1 base brush while I was learning the bulk of my fundimentals. No sense putting a bunch of bells and whistles on something that is, at its core, an assault on the eyes haha.

What if I am not particulary impressed by any artist? I just like the way some artists draw and effort the put in. Is it healthy to just study successful artists in your niche?

I learned from this that my thump on my right hand should be on the other side as it is...like in your art demo 😅

Did you notice that the first illustration having the hand the other way?
