Selling Car to Carmax | They Paid WAY Too Much For My Old Beater Car

I scammed Carmax! Not really, but that's what it feels like. Two years ago, I bought an A to B car and fixed it just enough to keep it running as long as possible. We finally bought another vehicle and had to sell the Cavalier. I didn't want to go through the hassle of a private party sale, and I didn't want to give someone else all the issues the car has, so I decided to try out Carmax. I was VERY pleasantly surprised.

Used car prices are so messed up right now. My lease payout was 14.5k, Carmax offered 22k for my car. Paid off the lease for 14.5k and cut me a 7.5k check for a leased car. So for 3 years, I spent 4k to drive a brand new car. Good part is new car prices haven't been affected yet. (If you can find one during this chip shortage)

Carmax is all about volume. They sell more cars then any other auto retailer in the world. And the only way they can do that is with inventory. So they treat customers good by offering top dollar for people selling vehicles and operate on slim margins. Win win for us the consumer.

I bought a 2019 Toyota Corolla for $15k last year, put around 5k miles on it. Decided I wanted the new Ford Maverick truck coming out so I took it to a few dealerships and was offered $14.5k-$15.2k at all 3 I went to. Not bad but I doubt I'd get much of a higher offer. Felt like a waste of time trying anymore. Decided to check Carmax and they ended up buying it for $17k yesterday, even despite a few blemishes

I will let you on something, your car went straight to auction! I work for carmax and trust me when i say you did not rip them off. Anything older than about 10-11 years goes to auction. Anything with super high miles goes to auction no matter the age. Anything with major mods goes to auction.

Was offered 23k for a 2018 gti. Just for reference I paid 23k for it 3 years ago when it was brand new. This might be because of inflation in the US right now though. Definitely a good time to sell property like houses and auto.

used car prices are crazy now so they pay alot more. i bought a 2019 Nissan Altima SR from a dealer for $16300 3 months ago and 2 weeks ago i sold the car to Carvana for $18500 !

Long story short, i signed a car for somebody, wasnt making payments. (Not working at all) so i took it to carmax and they bought it 🥳

This used car market is upside down. I sold a 25k mile pickup four years old w/a couple of dents. I soldit formore than I paid for it new. Thank you CarMax

CarMax bought a car from me for 27, 400...and they had to replaced ALL 4 tires and I saw they listed it for sale for $27, 600...lol they lost money on the deal.

They will make more than $700 off that car. Even though it’s in bad shape, they would make more at an auction or just to part it out. It’s still a good deal for both parties because used cars are in high demand right now.

They saw Military Plates on my car knew I bought it new and it was a offered 13K for it and sold it for 17K I got paid reasonable price. They will sale you car to a larger market of people that are willing to pay 1500 - 2000 dollars for the car. They can pull it off with minor maintenance on the car....My car was a 2014 Ford Fusion Titanium AWD....taking it to a dealer was a bad idea because after ever service, thanks to military plates on it, they broke something that was not in warranty on the car to attempt to get 3500 dollars out of me to fix it....so I sold it and allowed CarMax to fix it with no money lost to me.
