My mom calls it an “argument”. My dad calls it a “fight”. When I was nine I asked my mother “Are you and dad fighting?” She says “No we’re arguing.” My five year old brother says “Same thing!” And the argument ended right there. Both of my parents couldn’t breathe properly for a solid five minutes.

With my wife and I the moment extreme emotions show up in a conversation we stop. Grab a piece of paper. She writes a sentence or two. I write a sentence or two. Repeat. It amazing how quickly someone says. O that’s what you meant. That’s ok.

What usually works for me is when we start arguing, we go on until its clear we're getting nowhere after a few minutes. So then we'd stop, go cool off and formulate our thoughts into rational sentences for an hour or two, and come back. Usually by then one or both of us is ready to apologize, and/or we start actually discussing and coming to a point where both of us are on the same page, be it a compromise, deciding to disagree, realizing one person's point is better, or deciding we need more time to make a decision if that's what it was about. Works like a charm

My husband and I get into conversations. If they start to get heated, one of us will say ok neither of us is listening, let’s take a break and talk when we are calmer. I go to my games and he reads on the computer. Later we don’t even remember why we were fighting.
