An interesting note, the Liam Neeson Michael Collins movie was a movie not really made for kids and would've had a higher age rating, but the Irish film board purposely gave it a lower one on the grounds that it's a story more people need to see.

Given the shortness of this video, I'm amazed by the amount of information provided and the organized, logical, way in which it was provided. This is an excellent video on Collins and the issues facing Ireland at the time. I've been a fan of Collins every since I spent a year in Cork several decades ago, so I've watched/read a great deal about him. Really a great video here. It's like a whole semester jammed into less than half an hour.

Éamon De Valera said, "It is my considered opinion that in the fullness of time history will record the greatness of Michael Collins and it will be recorded at my expense."

You forgot to mention that Michael Collins was also involved in breaking Eamonn De Valera out of jail in England. Some thanks he got !!

As an Irishman, I’d like to say you have made a brilliant piece of work here. Despite the fact you aren’t from here, you’re evidently very well versed in our history.

The civil war is a difficult topic in Ireland even today, it often involves a lot of side glances and shuffled feet,

The wounds still haven’t fully healed from those dreadful days. My own GGG uncle fought in the IRA during the war of independence and civil war, and I still have internal strife when facing his legacy.

Did he fight out of a love for Ireland? Out of hatred for the State? For his home, family? These questions I’ll never answer. These questions we as a nation will never reconcile.

As a Brit I found him to be a figure I admired regardless of my stance, and its a shame both sides lost a great person.

Michael Collins and In the Name of the Father are two movies everyone with Irish ancestry should watch.
I really want a film about Brian Baru.

de Valera was a traitor to what Irish revolutionaries fought for and and his idiotic policies doomed Irish development for decades.

*Edit, the 'traitor to what Irish revolutionaries fought for' was for de Valera's policies as leader of Ireland where he backstabbed workers, women's rights and bent over fully to the Catholic church, an institution that had an important role aiding the British in their occupation. Also his disastrous trade war against Britain in the 30s was horrible.
Minor point, but the Hitler condolences was crazy, literally zero reason to do that. Also likely contributed to Ireland's late entry to the UN.

The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2007) is a great film on this topic.

Amazing video. As an American with Irish heritage, I’ve always felt strongly connected to the story of Irish independence. My grandfather always said we were related to him, through one of his cousins, I believe. I’m trying to verify that claim.

De Valera sent Michael Collins to negotiate the treaty because he knew what Irish patriots wanted, was not what was possible to obtain.
With full success at the treaty table not being possible Dev anticipated the failure, as did Michael himself. Therefore DeValera felt he could rush in & regain his dominance as the leader of the rebel movement, which he more or less became with the assassination of Michael Collins. DeValera was always the lesser man.
But being the shyte politician that Dev was, ordering the proxy murder of a better man was not beneath DeValera.

_"We serve neither king nor kaiser, but Ireland!"_

During the 1916 Easter Rising, some Irish republican leaders, including Patrick Pearse and Joseph Plunkett, considered installing a German prince, specifically Prince Joachim of Prussia, as king of an independent Ireland, envisioning a monarchy similar to Romania and Bulgaria.
