She never had control over your life. You said, “No!” That’s control.

I once had a boss in a lab who deliberately like to humiliate his assistants. One day he ordered me, I was an engineer, to get on my hands and knees and scrub the entire lab floor because I had left some scuff marks with my boots. It was a metallurgical lab so we did machining and testing and other messy things. Not a place requiring antiseptic cleanliness. I had a family and a small child to support so I gritted my teeth and did it. Not too long later I objected when he was deliberately rude to a senior engineer from another lab. When I got back that afternoon from solving a production problem on the aircraft line I found my desk contents thrown in the hallway. I went to our section chief for guidance. To my surprise he and our general manager burst out laughing. Turned out I had survived longer than any previous lab assistant. They had been waiting for this. I got a desk upstairs in the main office and very shortly afterwards a promotion in grade. I soon outranked my former lab boss and he had to work on my projects. Sometimes it works out when you hold your temper, take the crap and wait to see what happens.

Weird how a man who grew up seeing unimaginable poverty worldwide would be hurt by being put in the same position AS those poor people. 🤔

Evan left out one of the most important parts: that he decided then and there that he couldn't work for someone else ever again, that no one would have such power ovér him.

I remember early on at a position I had despite doing good a boss telling me be thankful I even had a job. Mind you I was doing all that was asked, and well. I ended up the best employee while watching the place mismanaged for years and bums not half what I was come through their doors. I'd call it 'under their watch' except given the position and nature of the work I can't say I blame someone for not taking the place seriously. Then I watched them tow the covid bs line and cower at home while I went in daily and held down the fort with very little help, as they let it fall further. You can bet your ass the remark from long ago plus others stuck, and it was time to show who was really in charge. Needless to say that got little to no notice when I finally decided to leave, and I sleep easily knowing they'll never be able to replace what walked out the door.
