The foreshadowing in this scene with Jon walking in after aemon mentioning a “lone Targaryen”. Oh what could have been.

Just to give some context about how long ago the Dance of the Dragons was, Aemon’s grandfather Daeron II was Daemon & Rhaenyra’s great grandson LOL

I wish they included the extra context to this quote.

In the books, Aemon reveals that he said this exact thing when his brother, Aegon "Egg" V became king. Egg was one of the protagonists in the excellent Dunk and Egg stories, but essentially, he was a young, idealistic Targaryen thrust into the position of King.

"Kill the boy, and let the man be born" was the last thing Aemon sever said to Aegon, before Aemon left for the Night's Watch. And here Aemon was again, telling a young Targaryen, thrust into a position greater than they imagined, to "kill the boy."

Such an underrated line. Boy doesn’t “become” a man. Must “kill” the boy to be reborn.

The "Kill the boy" monologue is written so beautifully, especially in the books.

Basically saying to let go of your childhood and "man / grow up." Let the man you will become manifest.

the fact that maester aemon is the reason jon snow is lord commander makes this even more touching

This scene really gets me after now knowing Jon is a Targaryen. It's heartbreaking in a way. Maester Aemon and Jon are family and they dont even know it.
I wish Maester Aemon could have known before he died. To know that another Targaryen was there at the Wall with him 😢
