I’m not saying I wanted more sexism, I’m saying that the extent of sexism shown was inaccurate. The Polgar sisters have written about their experience and it included not even being allowed to play in certain events and men refusing to shake their hands when they won. The show takes place even before that when it was even harder. However, it’s nice to have a female lead without making the show all about that. I’m seeing a lot of comments that are not even trying to interpret this correctly 😛

i thought you would mention that players were shocked the second they lose in the show, in reality these top players already know they’re losing many moves prior lol

Most accurate chess show out there? I'd dare say that it's the only chess show out there.

Literally the first thing the janitor said to her was “girls don’t play chess”

There were no draws if I remember well. I was wondering at the time, more than 50% of top chess games end in draw. Otherwise it was a good show and renewed interest for chess.

The Queen’s Gambit is what started my enthusiasm for chess and also when I discovered the Botez sisters so I can’t hate on it.

maybe i somehow just imagined it, but i seem to remember the main char not being taken for full, being laughed at and also being looked at in a weird way when she wanted to join that first competition. i’m not saying i’d love to see more, but like sexism was being shown quite vividly

I mean, she lost nearly 100% of her games in speed chess because she learned she’s no good at speed chess. Two different games.

"Queen's gambit was the most accurate chess show that was out there."
Of a field of how many chess shows exactly?

Bruh there was SO much sexism… The whole point of the show was that she was a genius chess player. She did lose matches that mattered but only to really good master chess players which was fine because again the whole point of the show was that she was a genius

"Didn't depict any sexism"

Literally copious amounts of sexism in nearly every other scene. They couldn't show losses because the female protagonist can have no flaws in modern media

I also enjoyed that it didn't put too much emphasis on sexism, it's would distract from the plot a bit, they added some scenes ro ahow it existed but there just wasn't any plot surrounding that ropic which is fine

I completely agree with the last part about the show not making it all about her being a female. When I see shows or movies that completely focus on a character’s gender or even sexuality and that’s their entire personality in the show/movie it makes it just bad. “What’s the personality of this character ” “he’s just gay” of course when it does show realism about the situation and it happens to involve sexuality and other things like that then that’s completely different. If it’s all in the viewer’s faces then it’s just bad and weird.

I feel like she lost quite a lot during the course of the show. She lost to the main antagonist 2 or three times. She lost to Benny in the us open and lost to him quite a lot at speed chess. I think she suffered a couple other losses during the show if I’m not mistaken

I watched a video explaining that Queen's Gambit is about a woman experiencing a man's journey, and it's pretty refreshing to see. Of course, I feel that it's only so because I'm aware that the creators chose this portrayal!

if anything, her getting her first loss so late in her career illustrates perfectly a prodigy that realizes they're not unbeatable. she didn't lose a lot of games because the show is not called botez gambit.

This show brought me back to chess. Prior I was just playing for fun, hovering around the 900-1000 range because I learned how to play at a young age. After watching the show I’m now 1600

Easy sailing? She was an orphan, both parents dead, no family, addicted to pills, abandoned by adopted father, lost to the kid from GOT and Maze Runner, adopted mother dies, becomes alcoholic, goes through depression and she’s a ginger?! Wtf more did they want her to go through?
