I loved what you did with those screencast-y file transfer animations in the beginning. That was a great way to illustrate the concept and I appreciate the work it must've taken to put that together.

Very helpful video, man. I just got done filming a talk show with your brother Brian as our guest speaker (in Fort Wayne). He speaks very highly of you. I just wanted to drop by and show some love to your channel.

Oh my goodness this literally couldn’t come at a more clutch moment! I got the notification that my package came in and it’s my portable external hardrive. I have my 8TB external hard drive set in my office but I wanted something that I can travel around with....sooo you can see why this video, explanation, and links are SUPER CLUTCH! Thank you so much!

Great advice thanks! My files are a mess and getting organised is my new year resolution! In the past I would end up with duplicates that were wasting space and time.

Thank you so much for this video. Are you are still using forklift for this or have found something you like better?

Very timely! I'm in the process reworking my file management as I'm always fighting for space. I have two portable drives, 1 TB each, that I use for active projects. They are mirrors of each other. Perfect for when traveling.

At home, I have a 2 TB RAID 10 that I use for older files, a 4 TB drive I use for my Plex server, and a 4 TB Drive I use for Time Machine. I’ve been looking at how to build my own NAS server instead of buying one off the shelf.

I used to use terminal scripts to sync the external drives, but I have since switched to SuperDuper.

Question: Do you ever clear off your portable externals or is that your redundancy? Do you just buy new portables when the old ones get full?

Cool idea, I didn’t know about ForkLift. I have been using ChronoSync to automatically archive my FCPX projects every night to an external drive. I can then sync that archive with another so I have 3 copies of the files. Been using that for a while and it works pretty good. If FCPX didn’t dislike network storage I would also archive the files to my Google Drive but the .fcpx files bomb - very annoying

Great video! What do you do with your project and video files on the Samsung SSD when you’ve completed the project? Do you delete them and rely on your Seagate drive should you ever need to revisit that project?

I would recommend the free version in the Mac app store over the newer version 3, because as far as I can tell there is nothing you can do in version 3 that you can't do in version 2, and version three is actually worse in two ways. First, as shown in the video there is a window at the top of the screen that shows the progress of file transfers, and they have removed that in version 3, now you must click a button to see that. So if you are doing other things you can't just tab back to ForkLift to see how far along your file transfer is. And second, if you have used SFTP to connect to two different servers (one in each window) and you are trying to copy a file from one to the other, in version two it just does an immediate server to server copy. But in version 3 it waits for the entire file to be downloaded to the local machine before it will start copying it to the destination. Think of it like a dump truck bringing a load of gravel to an industrial concrete mixer, but the truck dumps the gravel onto a conveyor belt where it goes to a room and then from that room to the mixer on a different conveyor belt. In version two of Forklift it's as though the two belts were joined together so as soon as the gravel arrives in the room it is immediately sent to the mixer. In version three of Forklift it's like when the gravel comes down the first conveyor it is dumped in a big pile on the floor and only once the entire load has been dumped will someone start to shovel the gravel onto the second conveyor belt going to the mixer. As you can imagine this wastes a considerable amount of time, and is the main reason I don't recommend Forklift 3 at all to anyone doing SFTP connections to other servers and wanting to transfer files between them.

Hi Javier, thanks for the great video!
I have a question on a completely different subject: your screenrecording looks great and I like the highlighting of the cursor. What software do you use to record? Thanks!
