Today we continue the Bob Moffatt collaboration series. Bob and me talk about our contrasting stick welding techniques while we do a 6010 root pass on a 8" sch 40 pipe. Dragging vs stitching angle, speed and hand positions. Hope this helps you out!

I've been welding for around 40 years and after watching your videos I realize that there is so much I have to learn that I dont know where to begin. I spent most of my time doing underwater welding which I guess is another story. Natural teachers like you willing to share their knowledge with younger people, who are not afraid to work for a living, are a treasure! My welding helmet is off to you!

Nice. this put a smile on my face.
We use 7016 DCEN for open root and I like to drag it until the gap starts to close. Then I switch to a J motion. Longarc it a tiny bit on the straight part of the J to heat up the base metal in front of the puddle to keep the keyhole going.
After that rod is finished I can up the amps and start dragging again. I'm a two hander like Bob, so messing about with a remote is not for me. Like always the secret is in reading the puddle and the keyhole.

K.I.S.S. principal works best for the most. I used the "x-mas tree" patern it as well for awhile but it was too easy, when I was beginning to be too slow with the patern and burn that key out. The drag method seems to work better for me now as the pacing of the pull (5 to 10 degree drag) is much easier and I figure that it'll work best for the most. It's nice to see the same result from the two different methods...Respect fellas.

Could you do a video on 309L-16 stick electrode running mainly vertical and overhead? We have areas where it is required to do this at my work and would like to see something on it cause no one has a video and trust me I know it’s a pain. Love the vids man keep em up! Especially the collaborations with Bob!

I’m a whip guy I like to see the key hole and fill it back in and it makes the weld on the inside looks like you back welded it. When I drag it sometimes the arc tends to favor one side of the bevel which makes me nervous about passing x Ray

You better show the appearance of the penetration there. So we can compare your christmas tree pattern and the drag. We're not here to criticize bro. We are also a welder. In this video im half satistied. Im sorry to say. I hope you show us the root because Bob is saying we got to clean inside to see. But you and Bob only see the root and not the viewers.

It's good to learn both techniques but my preference and the way I was taught was Bob's technique, but in reality the name of the game in the field is production, production, production, so the faster way is the better way if you take your time they notice how long you take but definitely both ways are good to learn

I like Bob's method better, but that boy from the 3rd coast is slick! Fancy jacket and hood!
