Wow! Not often that one simple change in technique has such a massive effective! This is one of those. I have been struggling for some time with (1) keeping my forward hand up while breathing and (2) turning my head forward before pulling with the opposite hand. Initiating my breathing just a fraction of a second earlier, keeping in mind your "pull yourself into breathe" mantra, and everything fell right into place. Not only did it solve those two problems, but this small change actually increase my distance per stroke (as it lengthened my glide during the breathe) but also helped me coordinate other aspects of my stroke and swim with less effort. Amazing! Thanks so much for this little tip.

I'm 73 and had both knees hips shoulder replacement and split femur with 18 inch rod and your videos have been very helpful. It has been a long trip. Oh and I was in the Air Force for 21 years. Life sometimes is hard. Thanks again.

Great video ! I'm a late learning adult swimmer and my coach picked up my late breathing and corrected it in a similar fashion. Went from a rushed partial breathe to a fuller more relaxed breathe. Other stroke aspects started to follow, but this was what got the ball rolling. To other late learner's get this right and then add the 6-1-6 drill (another great vid) and your swimming flow will start to happen !

Ahhh just what I need! Thanks Brenton! I’m a super beginner just started swimming a month ago and stumbled upon your channel and I couldn’t be more grateful! Learned a lot from you. You’re an amazing coach/teacher 🙌🏽

Great video Brenton! Thank you. I've found doing the 'Bird dog' core exercise in the gym, very helpful for training the arm to stay out in-front (without dropping) when turning head to breathe. It's also a great endurance exercise for the core, which translates well to freestyle swimming.

Amazing! Transformed my crawl in one swim from borderline breathless to could-go-for-ages. Such simple, sound advice to pull/breathe in sync. I've been punishing myself by breathing too late all these years...

I have been struggling to get that rhythm of breathing for so long....this video was the missing part...I watched it today in the morning and applied the technique and noticed a miraculous change in my swimming. Overall, armstroke, rotation and breathing everything fits perfectly now and I can swim more efficiently... thank you so much.

It’s as if you’ve read my mind. This is precisely what I was struggling with on my non-preferred side today. And, hey presto, it appears at the top of my YouTube feed!

Thanq. Yes … reaching out further forward with the non-pulling arm really helped me with side-breathing. It just clicked and my head is out of water effortlessly….literally. Maybe I wasn’t rotating correctly. So thanx once again.

I'm a beginner, I figure the best time for breathing is when the rotation peaks. In this way I don't need to worry about arms and it makes timing much easier.
