Hello. NATE-certified HVAC tech here. That's most likely not mold, and it didn't come out of the vent. It's dirt from the home. Airborne dust is pulled to the vent due to lower pressure surrounding the direct airflow, creating a mild suction back toward the vent. As long as they have a good filter, the duct is likely spotless inside.

As a maintenance tech, I can tell you the buildup of that black substance is more commonly dust instead of actual mold. Mold has a hard time growing at certain temperatures and when your AC is running, it actually inhibits the growth of mold, regardless of the moisture level/humidity. In some cases, it CAN be mold so we usually take it seriously regardless. But trust me, 90% of the time, you're not dealing with black mold, just dust. Which btw, can also cause some respiratory issues. Just not as detrimental as black mold.

Note worthy detail, if you leave for vacation for a couple weeks and shut your AC completely off, that's when you're risking a black mold infestation.

My family had black mold before under their couch where my older brother slept on. My family moved out of the apartment into a new one and got a new couch after everyone was getting sick by the black mold

Most of the cases of meniere's disease or benign positional vertigo I have known were closely associated with mold. This was reinforced when a friend who had BPV went on vacation and the symptoms disappeared...only to reappear when she returned home.
Then I met a nurse who had the symptoms but went to an allergy specialist instead of an ENT. Had to do some work clearing mold from her home, but guess what? The symptoms went away.

I used to live in a house with black mold. It was horrible. Always sick and nose blocked. Not only that but it was hard to breathe there.

As I've already read, it does actually look more like dust and dirt that's been blown out of the vent. I've seen black mold numerous times and it's more splotchy than that

We have black mold in my bathroom that refuses to stay dead luckily i dont think its causing us to be sick none of us have any symptoms. I have to get in their and scrub it out of the toilet sink and window blind every few days
