Putin orders deterrent forces onto high alert

President Vladimir Putin has ordered Russian nuclear deterrent forces to be put on high alert amid tensions with the West over his invasion of Ukraine.

Putin asserted at a meeting with his top officials on Sunday that leading NATO powers had made “aggressive statements” along with the West imposing hard-hitting financial sanctions against Russia, including the president himself.

The alert means Putin has ordered Russia’s nuclear weapons to be prepared for increased readiness to launch.

The fact this was discussed on camera and shown to the world indicates it's more posturing than anything else. They want civilians to see this, especially Ukraine. It's a reminder of 'hey, we're a nuclear superpower remember.'

You have to say that the two generals in uniform don't look that impressed. You can see them coming out of the room and thinking: 'the man's a freaking nut case'. Only each of them is too terrified to say it out loud in case the other one rats on him.
