Deck Building Tip: Joist to Beam Connection

I use my patented (not patented) pre-drill countersink that. I. Use. Every. Day to pre-drill a pilot hole on each side of the joist.

Then I blow two #10 x 3-inchers in there and fuse the joist to the beam.

The mighty DCA-6 Prescriptive Code calls for three fasteners here but only one inspector ever has asked me for three. I think that if I were popping gun nails in there, three would be well worth it. With screws, it feels like overkill.

💬 What do you think?

as a carpenter my self, I have a tip for you, get a second drill so you are not changing between drill bits and drive bits 😉

Personally I would use "hurricane ties" for this even if code doesn't require it in your specific area. It just seems much more solid than nails or screws.

Yeah I just blast in a couple of framing nails and move on with my life

I use velcro. Just in case I want to change things later on.

It's called a hurricane strap bud. $1.10 one per sitting joist. That's what the inspector really wants to see.

Rock solid. Board waves like a princess. Lol

Second video I've seen. I've never seen anyone criticized more.

I know nothing about US codes on these things, but when I built an, admittedly low level, deck I used galvanised joist hangers. Of course the beam was at the same level as the joists (indeed, all the same dimensions which, from memory, were 2" x 6" with the longest unsupported span being about 10 feet). Joist spacing was about 14" with what's called "noggings" between joists. Basically a length of 2 x 6 cut to length and fitted between adjacent joists at intervals.

I can't say I like the way that "rock solid" joist wobbled when it was hit, but I assume there will be some form of bracing.

I like to hang them on the beam so you can flush up the tops since pt lumber varies so much in width

I think that the way you are doing it is fine. I do NOT think you will have issues. However, it might be sensible to just go ahead and use the Hurricane fasteners, if they add additional stability? I kinda like over building, within reason, but I am NOT an experienced carpenter by any measure, I would like to build my deck.

If you want it rock solid, put another 2×10 on the back side of your 4×4s then slide a piece of 2×4 inbetween those two 2×10s at your floor joist and fasten to both rim joists and then to the floor joist. THAT IS ROCK SOLID!

All this talk about using hurricane ties when your essentially pining the joist more so to stabilizing left/right movement. The hurricane ties are for uplift restriction in high wind areas.

I like it, save the splits and it just takes a second. Our OBC code calls for nails but screws are cleaner.

I put my blocks in as I go!. But I hope you got a box of snickers.

Ive got a bit like that flips from a countersink to a screw bit

Wrong, those joist should have Simpson hurricane hardware

I built my deck with screws and then a construction freind of mine told me that I should have used nails because if we get an earthquake the screws can shear/brake off but the nails will just bend back and forth and way less likely to scrap off. 🧐 haven’t had an earthquake lately so that’s good 🤣

Hope you have flashing on the ledger! +1 for H clips tho, or decking screws with no pre-drilling

I've often times ran my deck screw in reverse for a few seconds to mimic a bit and then drove in a fastener without splitting. Most screws now come with a drill tip for this exact reason
When you're that far from the edge especially in PT material you're not gonna split the wood especially with 3" deck screws. Don't over complicate shit

Code I’m under is 2/1 plus a hurricane strap (simpson h2.5 I believe) on every joist to drop beam connection.
