Here are the main concepts described in the video:

1. Gain a positional advantage
1a. Do so by winning the grip fight
1b. Break their grips if they're already established
1c. If you can't break their grips, adjust the gi so your grips are higher and more dominant
2. Use snap-down to break their posture and create an opening
2a. This also creates an opportunity to break their grips
3. Use either advantage to throw

The one word that is dreaded in Higashi household is "BOOM!".

I fought from 7- 21 competitively to a high level. I returned for a 4 month stint in my late twenties but it ended really at 19. I decided to embark on a new journey after lockdown in the UK. I got a personal trainer once a week. He’s my age 49yrs and fought 10 years ago. We are both black belts and we train the two of us in his gym as by chance he has judo mats. Fate or what. We focus on technique and fitness. I feel like a judoka again. Can’t tell u what it’s given me within. My mind is as quick and I still have the moves. It’s so weird but comforting that after 30 years I can return to a sport that is still very much part of me. Tbh it never ever left me. Judo is calm and a way of being. It is not just a sport but if you embrace its meaning, spirit and purpose you will gain so much more from it as a person. Love all the Higashi videos and they continue to give me inspiration.

"Don't even get me started on that..." I felt that lol
Super useful content, as always.

I am a bjj student. I love this channel cause all the throws are allowed in bjj. My school doesnt teach alot of throws. Watching this channel teaches alot of good mechanics of techniques like being their in that school.

I did Judo when I was 7-8. Now I am 48 and father of twins who also are training. Returning to the game and loving the sport. Thank you for the great videos and insights. I've forgotten it all (less o-goshi + kesa gatame :) ) but really enjoy the videos and their great content. Climbing and learning again. Thank you.

Your channel deserves so much more love. I do BJJ, there's no Judo around me otherwise I'd cross-train. These tutorials are so well done that I'm able to work them on the mat with a friend (and some minor corrections from our instructor) and they come out beautifully! Thanks a lot!

Good morning! Great tip for all judokas; that move seems to be an early defensive posture for most until they figure out how to counter it. Thank you Sensei and 'better half' Uke ;)

I started training bjj first and after 6 months I tried judo, I always wanted to learn judo but bjj has more schools and more publicity in general. In this judo school they teach so many good things besides martial arts, it is fantastic, I see why they say it helps you grow as a person too. They do practice ne waza so my bjj has come in handy, and on bjj open mats I have a chance to practice judo takedowns, if my opponent is not pulling guard. Judo is awesome.

Not gonna lie, but I expected a Harai Tsurikomi Ashi at 5:25
However, that Harai Goshi was unexpected and Smart!

Thank you Shintaro. In such situation I like to use combination of sasae and osoto. First I make distance shorter by pulling and going away from the path of uke. In second phase I start to move in the same direction as the defensive uke who is pulling back.

Another great video guys! You’ve got me really inspired to be trying this stuff. I currently study karate but am really interested in learning some other arts. I hope to find a judo instructor as passionate as you

Thank you. I’ve had this question for weeks! ☀️

I would have given anything to have access to info like this 10 years ago when I trained. My sensei even looked and was funny such as Shintaro!! Lol

Now I want to add that ancient and long forgotten knowledge in me to my BJJ journey.

Thank you very much for the video!💜💜💜
Probably one of the most useful lessons for people practicing grappling arts in BJJ environments

Love watching Judo, my favorite. I train BJJ but enjoy watching Judo more than BJJ

That's a very realistic approach to the problem. Good video.

Would be great if there is a sequel to this. I struggle as a beginner with defensive opponents during randori.
