Hi, my name is Heather Ford and I am a traffic attorney based out of New Orleans, also known as the traffic ticket lady. And I want to talk a little bit about what's a moving violation and why does it matter?

So what is a moving violation? And why does it matter? So basically, a moving violation is anything associated with the car in motion by in large. So a speeding ticket, a red light ticket, failure to stop at a stop sign, any of those types of violations are considered moving.

A non-moving might be an expired brake tag, registration, things of those natures are considered non-moving.

And why? Why is this important to make a distinction about? Well, moving violations can impact your insurance rate. They can also impact your driving record and your ability to work a job where you use a car. So sometimes you might work the position where you're driving a company car, or even just driving as part of your duties. And so they will check your driving record when they hire you. And they usually do check that record yearly. So a moving violation in that instance can have an impact on your ability to work.

In Louisiana, our car insurance is extremely, extremely high. And a simple speeding ticket could easily cost you an extra $1,000 a year in increased premiums. So that's why it matters. So I would always encourage you if you get any type of ticket that has a moving violation, do whatever you can to try to get that charge reduced or amended to a nonmoving, always appear, reach out to the court, make the request for their charge to be adjusted because it can have an impact on you might not be today. And that's usually the hardest thing is to undo something that's been done.

Occasionally clients call me now all of a sudden, this ticket that they paid six months a year ago is a problem. And you know depending on some course we have some option to undo some of those things, some of the damage associated with paying that ticket, but it's not always possible. And also remember paying a ticket is the same thing as pleading guilty.

I drive for FedEx freight and got a ticket in my personal vehicle and FedEx’s policy wont allow me to reduce the moving violations to a non moving violation. What should I do?
