One of the most frustrating problems i dealt with in college was them telling me that ADHD is not a valid diagnosis to receive help in any sort of way from the staff. Im hoping things are better for newer generations, that crushed me. Might as well have said "sucks to be you". I still muddled through but had to essentially destroy my social life entirely to even do that

I was late diagnosed because my adhd displayed mostly as maladaptive daydreaming or sorta hyper focusing on schoolwork. I had a few teachers who hated me because I would do my homework or read through class, which made me come off as inattentive, but most of my teachers loved me because I was clever and would deep dive into the topic I was being taught. But I still definitely have trauma regarding my weird over excitement, which lead to lack of friends my own age, or the childhood abuse from my parents over my "selective hearing, " which was really just them not getting my attention first.

I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 35. It took me 30 years to realize the shame put onto me by my kindergarten teacher has negatively impacted the perception of myself. I masked most of my life to mold my behaviors to what I thought everyone around me or society thought how I should behave or who I should be. The self-judgement, self-rejection, lack of self-esteem and self-confidence and the need to please others to feel loved and accepted led to trauma in various aspects and relationships within my life. I’m grateful I’m finally getting the healing I need and have the strength to be and live my most authentic self.

I cant even explain how validating so much of this information was, and how close it mirrors my childhood. Thank you. My parents tried hard but often the schools didnt to help me.

As somone who was diagnosed with adhd at a young age, I never knew what that meant. My mother always tried to tell me that I'm still great just the way I am, but she never taught me how I was different, or why I would struggle in school. All I knew was I had 4 little letters that were a part of me. It wasn't until I reached adulthood and started noticing all my friends and a handful of content creators with adhd and how they think and cope that I finally started to understand that it wasn't just that I wasn't trying hard enough.

ADHD is so frustrating. Im "supposed" to be so smart but cant even do regular things like call the plumber or pay the electric bill on time. I "didnt have it" as a kid because it was a "fake disease" and now I "don't have it" as an adult b3cause I wasnt diagnosed as a kid. This is why you guys are so important, to help those of us that fell through the cracks!

Great chat. To that last question- I think that psychiatrists "objectivey" is an outsider look at ADHD, where the diagnosis is about how much you disrupted others.
Now, with social media, people are seeing an internal perspective of what it is like. It always seemed normal to us to be this way (and our families act like that too). So we didn't see ourselves in the diagnostic criteria from an outside perspective. We do see ourselves in people's personal reflection.

Pertaining “Escapsim”, I think that’s more about the lack of safety and security in the core and inner wounds. I believe I do this also, but it’s not purposely to escape or disassociate from reality, but in my reality there’s limited safety and security outside of me. So I tend to daydream while in the unsafe place. Meaning there’s some safety, and done unsafety all at the same time.

I know ADHD isn't diagnosed or considered a disorder unless there is impairment. But what about kids/people with ADHD "brain wiring" who were able to find ways to compensate and adapt to a neuro typical environment? If we are able to identify ADHD characteristics and confirm differences in brain function, wouldn't it be prudent to modify the environment and focus on building skill sets before the condition becomes a disorder? I think we understand (and I know from personal experience) there's a lot of added stress neurodivergent people undergo to keep up with neurotypical people and might this stress lead to depression later in life? What if we could get in front of the problem instead of reacting to it?
