After driving the Ford Mustang Mach-E press car in January 2021, we immediately knew that in most of the ways that mattered, Ford had seemingly built a better Tesla. So Matt bought one for himself and his wife. Now, two years and 17,000 miles later, Zack and Matt take a road trip to Arizona to discuss the ups and downs of 2 years of Mach-E ownership, as well as demonstrate the charge network (and see some awesome stand--up comedy).

Shoutout to the Mullet Arena in Tempe, AZ for hooking up the Skybox to see Bert Kreischer!

The audio gets out of sync around 14 minutes but is fixed about a minute later. It's fine in the project file so something happened during export or YouTube processing *shrug*. Sorry!

I love this return to old-school TST form, I hope the investment starts to pay off again soon

This is definitely your strongest format. You might have been too early in the past but this is definitely the new way to go.

I'm liking this format. I know you guys said on the podcast that it isn't bringing in the dollars you'd like, so here's me doing my part to up your engagement numbers. The storytelling aspect is great, makes a nice compliment to the free-flowing nature of a podcast discussion. BTW "Totally logitech" took me by surprise and made me laugh out loud. Cheers.

You're 100% correct that if you have a non-Tesla EV relying on the CCS network, it's charging anxiety. I'm not even going to say infrastructure anxiety, because even if the infrastructure is 100%, you still have to deal with people at the charger. Be that lines, people done and not moving their car, using the wrong charging apparatus (i need 350kW because it's fast...even though my car can only charge at 150kW max), etc.

Thanks for the full review of your car.

Great watch. One thing - I noticed an audio/video de-sync start around 13:30 and get real bad by close to 15mins. Not sure what happened there, but great informative video otherwise!

Infrastructure Anxiety is 100% spot on. I had a 300k trip in a Nissan Leaf which turned into a total disaster. Chargers missing from where they should be, chargers vandalised or not working, it was a total nightmare and has put me off switching until Ireland has a reliable charger network.

I’ve been watching TST since the beginning and I love the return of this style of video, it might not be as profitable but the true OG fans love it

If the Mustang Mach e accepts 150kw and you plug into a potential 350kw charger you will never realize that level power. Even if the charger is rated at 150-350 kw it also depends on your state if charge. Max charging speeds is only possible at lower levels if charge and it will throttle back as the charge level in the battery builds. But this video is a yr old so I guess you've figured this out by now. Further you charged to 86% it's likely not the most efficient level to charge to. You need to plan your trip where it's likely charging what you "need" is possibly faster than aiming at really high levels of charge. It could be, , , stopping twice for 15 min is better than once for 40 min. Use A Better Route Planner and the route creation is really good. Also set a charge location in your car nab system and then set a backup nearby in your phone. Sounds like a hassle but the backup provides for less stress. Finally while it's nice to go 80mph and just power on if you can see your way to the speed limit or a tiny bit less you will likely get there faster if you need one less stop. Convenient? Nope, but a routine makes EV use not as frustrating while the infrastructure evolves. 👍

Hey, quick tip from own Mach E ownership experience (22 AWD extended range). If you find an EA station with a 350 charger that has the reduced power screen, but there are 150’s available - take the 150. I started on the 350 with roughly the same state of charge as you, and was getting about 80kWh - then switched to a 150 station after a few minutes. Rate shot up to 120kWh for a while. Was glad I swapped.

Thanks for the video! Loved it.

As a Ford sales consultant... the window issue is very easy to reprogram yourself. Just hold the button until it stops at the top, then release and hold it again for 5 seconds. Then repeat the same process going down. It trains the motor to recognize what fully closed and fully open are.

As a long time fan I enjoy this long form/story content and the one takes equally! I understand YT is a business so whatever you guys decide to proceed with, I'll be watching! Thanks for making great car content for so long.

Electrify America sucks. You nailed it with infrastructure anxiety. I've taken my i4 on a few short trips that require charging and it's maddening. Chargers that randomly lose connection after 1 or 2 minutes, chargers that are supposed to deliver 150+Kwh and they deliver 50-60. Just ridiculous.

Good, thoughtful, informative, fair review. Also an owner, wife got a premium in July 2021 and i got a base GT in Jan 2022.

Great video, Matt! I always enjoy long-term reviews like these because you get the kind of info that is truly useful if you are looking to own the vehicle in question. I'm glad to hear it's held up pretty well, though I am surprised by the buttons rubbing off. Probably some kind of supplier issue that hopefully has been improved. Shame about the chargers, but we all know how that goes...I do wonder how long it will take for the charging network to become as reliable as putting gas in a gas tank.

The supercharger network is where Tesla is still so far ahead. A Mach-E with the Tesla Supercharger reliability would be fantastic.

One thing I'll add is that living in the middle of the northeast conurban sprawl, the charging network is not bad. And the Ford plug and charge system has worked more or less flawlessly the few times I've used it with EA but with a couple hiccups with EVGo and Blink. Like Matt we do 90+% of our charging at home.

I loved your point about “infrastructure anxiety”. It’s the number one thing I’m researching. I want and EV but I’m terrified that I’ll be caught in some kind of nightmare trying to find a charger that works.

4:43 Ha! Arizona Mills mall charging station. :) Last time I went by there they were ripping out the old chargers and replacing them with the new ones. Looks like this was after they finished.
