Practice The Order of Operations

In this lesson we follow up on our lesson on the order of operations and look at some additional problems. The order of operations tells us which operation to perform in which order, when faced with multiple operations. Students often remember the order of operations using the "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally" technique. Each first letter of each word stands for something. The order of operations:
1) Remove parentheses, and/or brackets
2) Apply exponents
3) Multiply or Divide (working from left to right)
4) Add or Subtract (working from left to right)

Yes, -15 - 9 = -24. If you change the problem to -15+(-9), this still equals -24; negative plus negative is going to have a negative answer.
