Thank you for that. I only discovered Sir Roger about two and a half years ago and was enthralled by his wit, his erudition and his love of England and Western culture. Every time he spoke, no matter what the subject, one could be guaranteed an original and brilliant perspective put forward with such elegance and grace. He will be sorely missed.

I am devastated at the death of Roger Scruton, I was shocked at hardly an mention of him in the media. I greatly enjoyed reading his newsletter News from Scrutopia ...a wonderful man and he grew up in Marlow where I used to live and my in-laws still do ....sad loss

Your final thoughts we mine exactly--and what I told my class this morning when I was discussing Milton's idea in Areopagitica of a book as a man's essence. I've only read 10 of Sir Roger's books, but with forty more to go and the chance to re-read favorites, I think I can look forward to years of the pleasure of his company. And if I can make my own recommendation to a first-time Scruton reader, try News From Somewhere: a delight.

Daniel that’s really wonderful, I met the man once and knew him by proxy. He was truly one of the greatest writers I’ve had the pleasure of reading and briefly meeting. His death hit me harder than I could have anticipated, thank you for your kind words.

Thank you Dan. To have had the cop-on to recognise a great man at 16, is frankly a rarity. Sir Roger has filled a lot of gaps in my education. He was a thoughtful and sincere man whose legacy will not diminish. An exceptional teacher. I found him late in life, but better late than never. I'm sure he will continue to inspire people for a long time to come.

Fantastic Dan, as always. I wonder if you saw yesterday’s BBC’s online article about Sir Roger, it was so steeped in dislike of him and missed out so many of his achievements. RIP Scruton.
