Can I take HRT after breast cancer?

👉Why don’t we have good evidence to show that HRT is safe after breast cancer?

Despite international guidelines, some menopause specialists believe HRT is safe for some women after breast cancer based on the data presented by Dr Bluming in his book ‘Estrogen Matters’ and a recent article in The Cancer Journal

I’ve read the book. He quotes one trial 3 times to prove that HRT is safe. It was behind a paywall but if it was that important to Dr Bluming’s case for HRT, I paid for a copy.

Guess what - it’s not even about HRT. It’s a trial that’s 50 years old comparing tamoxifen against high dose oestrogen for the treatment of breast cancer. This is before we knew how tamoxifen works and before it was licensed to treat breast cancer.

HRT isn’t mentioned once in the paper. And the trial had a lot of flaws. I’ve listed them all so you can follow my chain of thought.

I don’t see how anyone could use this study to prove that HRT might be safe after breast cancer.

There isn't good evidence of either safety or harm, but there is a paternalistic double standard with women and estrogen - all medications and surgeries come with some risks, yet in every other area of medicine patients are afforded the autonomy to choose to accept the risks in order to obtain the benefits of treatment. But not women in this situation. I feel really strongly that choosing quality of life over potential length of life is a perfectly valid point of view and should be respected by clinicians.

OK, and for the women who are suicidally depressed without HRT? You yammer on about your side effects from tamoxifen, which clearly you tolerated, but you ignore that some women simply can't tolerate tamoxifen, and that some are literally suicidal without HRT.

Im 39 in surgical menopause, and Im starting hrt after being off for 3 months. I feel terrible, and I never want to be without my estrogen ever again.

I would happily take HRT if breast cancer was found. Menopause Taylor on you tube did a 55 video unit on breast cancer. Shocked at how women with Stage 0 precancerous cells were scared silly that they had cancer, when it was precancerous.
We only live one life, being miserable is no excuse to not keto them have HRT

The study you’re talking about was literally giving patients estrogen AS a cancer treatment - meaning that the primary cancer wasn’t completely treated like we do today with Tamoxifen or AI. If only a couple of the ER+ women had reoccurrences, isn’t that nothing short of a miracle? They ALL should have had reoccurrences due to the high dose and proximity to the original diagnosis right?

Also the recent longitudinal study about HRT after early breast cancer in 2022 which followed women for 10-15 years was not mentioned. Good for you for takling this, but misinformation about HRT pre breast cancer is also prevalent online. Dr Louise Newson says that there is no link. I believed her. Now I face masectomy & I am lucky things could have been much worse. THINK TWICE BEFORE YOU TAKE HRT.
