Just an fyi > They were never meant to be shot without a finder on them. Canon made proper waist level finders for that purpose. But just removing the prism and shooting like that allows all sorts of dust and debris into the mechanism.

Thank you Mathieu. The Nikon F through F5 also had waist level viewfinders. Some of them were magnified for ground level macro or reproduction photography. May want to give them a try.

How is it so bright? I look through my Minoltaflex and it is dim as anything, the only viewfinder I have seen so bright are the ones like the Lubitel 166 where it isn't covered fully in ground glass.

I always loved composing without the prism on my Nikon F3, which is similar to the this Canon. I always felt the reverse image on the groundglass made me see things differently

Is there a hybrid viewfinder with both waste and eye level? Specifically for the Nikon F3? (without taking it off). I think I've seen people using it, but I don't know what to search for.

Do you use an external light meter when using the waist level finder? Or do you use your desired shutter and set your aperture the highest it goes?

I don't know what you changed about locking your video camera to the photo camera, but it's looking pretty sleek compared to the earlier videos where everything kind of moved on its own! :)
