The lens is a fixed focal length so I’m confused as to what turning the lens does. Why does it puts the subject in focus?

Please help, if possible, Just got my WLF, super mint... But was shipped in just bubble wrap, now i fear it got slighly squished because it's extremely tricky / sticky to open. Not sure if this was the design or my technique. The magnifier comes out when it wants, sometimes fliping beyond the 90° its supposed to... Is it because it's actually original unused and stiff? Or because i don't kniw how to used it? Or is it a little bent from poor shipping?
