The home-schooled kids I've taught have been a cut above the regular kids when it comes to attention, grasping concepts and enthusiasm, to name just a few benefits of home-schooling. Without exception, in my experience home-schooled kids are better at learning, and learn faster.

I was a military recruiter for over fifteen years. We administered the ASVAB test to anyone who wanted to join up. The minimum score at the time to join the Army was 31 out of a possible 99. Most of the prospects were from the public schools and their scores were dreadful. These were the kids that came to me and really really wanted to join and they could not because of their low scores. Whenever I was blessed to be contacted by a homeschooled student, I never had to worry about them passing the test. They would score in the 90’s and finish their exam with a lot of time to spare. I knew right then that whenever I became a father that my wife would stay home and homeschool our children and that’s exactly what we did. My wife loves her new job as a stay at home mom and teacher and I work my ass off to provide for our growing family. It’s worth it. Our kids are NORMAL and SMART! That’s a huge victory in this day and age! I believe the goal for the Dept of Education these days is to produce kids who are abnormal and dumb. Easier to control the masses that way of course…

I volunteered at a history museum. Public school students would come in, often raise a ruckus, with everyone acting like they were on a sugar high. We hoped that nothing would be broken. Home school students were always polite, well-behaved, usually asked intelligent questions, often had notebooks in which they wrote down what we told them. Most had some kind of assignment to complete in their trip to the museum. Even if nothing was said, I would ask the adult if the children were home-schooled. You could always tell.

If homeschooling produced democrat voters instead of Republican you can bet Oliver's segment would have been about higher test scores, emotional maturity, higher reading levels, lower teen birth rates, lower suicidality, etc.

The primary hole in Oliver's argument is that the state is somehow more accountable and caring of every child in America than their own parents. Normally even making this assertion would be considered a JOKE.

When I was in my early twenties, I heard a school teacher at my church use the “we have to watch out for abuse” argument with my mother. I was homeschooled all the way through high school. My mother was as chill as she could be, but I could tell she was seeing red. My family knew of a handful of abused children. None of them were homeschooled. My parents were the ones to get CPS involved. They were the ones to provide a place for them to go. What were the teachers doing that couldn’t be done by others? From what these kids said, no one at their school could help them.

One of my relatives is extremely autistic. He cannot go to public school, he freaks out when in a crowd and when he hears loud noises. So his mother has no choice but to home-school him. I kid you not, the boy is a master crop farmer. He's half my age and constantly wins 1st place prizes in several different vegetable growing categories. He's got it down to a science. He loves everything agriculture. We couldn't be more proud. He's home-schooled and we know he'll go on to do great things.

My little brother was being told at school that he’s incapable of reading… she was basically calling him stupid everyday and my mom realized he was getting his poor self image from someone prominent. Talked to the teacher and immediately took him out for home school. He’s been much better ever since. It’s ridiculous that these teachers can get paid for being shit people to other peoples’ kids
