Russia offers Mariupol defenders a surrender window - BBC News

Russia says it will spare the lives of Ukrainian soldiers in Mariupol if they lay down their arms on Sunday.

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky earlier said eliminating Ukrainian fighters in Mariupol would put an end to talks.

Russia is planning to restrict access to Mariupol from Monday, city officials say.

If I recall correctly, in the 2014 invasion the Russians offered a surrender window and a safe passage out of the combat zone for the Ukrainians trapped there. They then promptly ambushed the retreating Ukrainians killing over 400. Look up Battle of IIovaisk 2014.

Given the war crimes committed in Bucha, surrender means certain death anyways. Most of them probably rather die fighting on their feet than shot with on their knees.

Over a thousand have already surrendered in Mariupol, and are still alive for now at least. No need to die having failed in your goal live to fight another day! It's obvious what's next if they choose to be 'heros' Russia turns the site into a cemetery !! No need to needlessly die!

Zelensky said, they are defending themselves. Not the city and not people but themselves! That is the only truth I've heard lately from Zelenksky. Bravo. The next city where the Ukrainian heros will be defending themselves is going to be Nikolaev, I suppose?
