She was a funny and sweet lady. She helped me with my snowshoes . She said she had a couple of two young girls, and her husband was also a ranger. Met her shortly before this happened., very sad event.

Aside from this, Rangering is more dangerous than most of us assume. Lots of nasty people seek to hide their crimes and selves in the forest cover.

As a former park ranger in CA & park officer in northwest CO, I can tell you, people have NO idea just how dangerous a park ranger/officer job really is. When I was young & dumb & took an unarmed position as a ranger for Humboldt Co Parks in 1987 in the redwoods, I was ALMOST shot in the back by a drunk outlaw camper while collecting camping fees. I had zero cover, zero law enforcement training & when I realized I was dead, I literally said a prayer to God & made peace with dying. All the while I could hear his wife SCREAMING "DON'T DO IT, DON'T KILL HER" over & over. The wife saved my life without a doubt. This was only one example. In 2001, I finally went through the police academy in CO, & came right out & became a seasonal State Park fully commissioned law enforcement officer with my main duty as boat patrol on a reservoir, land patrol, river patrol & ohv patrol during hunting season. What people do not understand is, when someone commits a crime or runs with an outstanding warrant-most often felony warrants, they go "hide" in your far out parks, whether, county, state or federal & the rangers/officers get to deal with them often without backup & backup on average of 30 minutes away. Knowing what I know & have seen, is why I say, you should never, ever go to the parks unarmed. fyi: the 2nd park my ex-husband & I lived in in northern California called Jed Smith Redwood State Park had (3) murders happen within (3) years & the killers were not found for years. In 1981-2, while living in Yosemite NP & working for the concessionaire, a FBI agent was killed & sent floating down the Merced River while investigating the drug ring within the park on top of the fact, there were so many bears, one of which tried tackling me, I rarely hiked into the wilderness. People just have NO idea what really occurs within the parks.

As a park ranger thanks for shedding light on this subject it's super important for folks to know we do more than just enjoy the outdoors, from search and rescue to violence we have to really deal with so much and knowing an officer that was involved in this many of these stories folks talk about stick with us for the rest of our lives, but we do it because it truly is a service, and the people you meet and help change your life.

My dad threw a fit. He wouldn’t allow me to become a ranger. He said women were always being k/ller in parks. Maybe he saved my life. I was pretty mad at the time. But this story is not an anomaly. Many people go missing or are found dead in the parks. Go with lots of friends and stay strapped and ready.

What do people mean by "high powered rifle"?

Once again WTh does anyone need a gun like this for in modern society- for one thing only! There is ZERO need for civilians to own weapons of this magnitude!! Other countries must think we are freaking nuts, and we are, for letting people possess weapons like this! These are not for hunting NOR protection and the leads to the only other reason THIS👆right here! My heart goes out to her loved ones 😞

Thank God I can’t hike. Your stories scare the living excrement out of me. I do love your story telling though.

Cuz when somebody goes high be ready to go high in the woods because most people don't know how to go into the woods and y'all won't survive you didn't grow up in the woods or out in the boondocks somewhere that won't survive in the woods you grew up in the city you need to stay in the sea cuz those people go high out in the boondocks that means behind for a reason we don't want to be found
