Ever wondered what the rule of law actually means and why we have it?

The rule of law is fundamental to keeping a fair and civil society. Here are 4 examples of how the rule of law helps protect us in everyday life, and what this important concept does for our human rights.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EachOther is a UK-focused charity that uses independent journalism, story-telling and film-making to put the human into human rights. The digital content we produce is grounded in the lived experience of ordinary people affected by human rights issues. We involve them in the process of developing their stories, rather than talking for or over them. Theirs are the voices we platform and amplify to our lay audience of over a million viewers each year. In this way, we hope to grow public support for human rights here in the UK.

1_ The law applies to everyone:
The government and everyone is involved in the state are bound by the law and nobody is above it.
2_ laws can't be secret:
Laws must be made transparently and in public
3_ no past laws:
From the day a law is made it must take effect in the future, it cannot be applied to past events.
4_ The courts make sure the law is correctly applied:
It is the role of judges to apply the laws, that includes making sure the state doesn't breach our human rights. The rule of law is a powerful tool to protect us against injustice. The courts ensure we are not treated unfairly or arbitrarily deprived of our rights.
5_ judges are not enemies of the people instead they protect them.
