Journey's End - Original Ending | Doctor Who Series 4

Series 4 of Doctor Who originally ended with a cliffhanger, where the Cybermen suddenly appeared inside the TARDIS. There was also an additional scene of Donna recognising the sound of the TARDIS. However, ultimately Russell T Davies was convinced to change the ending and the scenes ended up as deleted scenes on the Series 4 boxset. This video attempts to recreate the Series 4 ending as RTD originally envisioned it. Enjoy!

This is what Russell had to say about the alternate ending on the deleted scenes extra for the Series 4 boxset: “This is an alternative and new ending to episode 13. First of all you get an extra sequence of Donna in the kitchen hearing the TARDIS dematerialise, that I loved and Phil loved but Julie put her foot down about this. And she was right because she asked why Donna recognises the sound of the TARDIS when she’s just seen the Doctor, and you can’t really argue your way out of it. It was an emotional beat too far really so we were right to cut it, even though it broke Phil’s heart – he loved that scene. We then go into a very different ending, which ends on a cliffhanger for the series, that I wrote, and I loved it, and I was then convinced otherwise by Ben Cook of Doctor Who Magazine, who took me to task on it and said that’s the wrong ending for such a sad episode. And I agreed. I still love it though. Part of me thinks we should have done this. It’s good, it’s got Cybermen in it!”

Hi guys, I hope you enjoy seeing this alternate ending to Series 4 as much as I enjoyed making it! If you did enjoy the video, please leave a like as it means a lot to me, and let me know your thoughts on this ending in the comments. Do you prefer it to the actual ending? As much as I like this version, I personally prefer the real thing as I'm a sucker for sad endings!

The Cybermen just standing up behind him are hilarious. Nobody expects the Cyber Inquisition.

Yeah I think it was for the best that they didn't add that ending. the donna part was interesting but the Cybermen standing up looked so ridiculous.

I remember at the time I was hoping Russell wouldn't do this - he did it in Doomsday and Last of the time lords - suddenly introduce the subject of next Christmas special in the series finale with the Doctor going "WHAT??" - and it's such a bad idea cause it breaks the mood and I get tonal whiplash. I was so glad when he just did the devastating moment of drama in this one and then just let the episode end

I agree with most that the ending we got was preferable. However it's a pity the scene where Donna looks back towards the sound of the TARDIS and Wilf closing the front door wasn't retained.

It's not the best ending, but I do love David Tenant's tired first "what?"

It shows the progression of his grief throughout the series really well.

Donna's crying at the end somehow she knew

I thought I saw this cliffhanger when I was younger! Thought I was going mad when I couldn't find it

I think that would have been a great ending. But did every series have to end with David Tennant saying "What?"

The Cybermen stand up like they're going to say "Excuse me sir, do you have a moment to talk about our lord and saviour?"

I remember watching this on the boxset, obviously there would have been another effect for the Cybermen appearing, and thought it would have been quite good and how it would lead into The Next Doctor.

Since a couple of people have asked why the Cybermen appear (and I'm feeling generous), here is how the following episode - The Next Doctor - would originally have opened had this ending been used. Credit obviously goes to RTD:

1. INT. TARDIS - NIGHT

REPEAT the end of 4.13; THE DOCTOR alone. He walks around the console. A bleep from the scanner, he studies it…

THE DOCTOR:
What?
(looks closer)
What??
(even closer)
Whaaatt???

And he’s bending forward, staring, not noticing… the TWO CYBERMEN rearing up behind him!!

NEW MATERIAL. The Doctor spins round - !

THE DOCTOR (CONT’D):
What?!

FX: THE TWO CYBERMEN… fade away…

The Doctor looks round, hearing a whoosh…

FX: THE TWO CYBERMEN reappear, fading up at the top of the ramp. Both flailing, slowly, as if falling…

The Doctor takes a step towards them, boggling!

FX: and the two CYBERMEN fade again. A second later, one fades back into existence, right by the wooden door; it’s as though they’re phasing through the Tardis.

FX: CU that Cyberman fades, gone.

The Doctor runs to the console, throwing levers –

THE DOCTOR (CONT’D):
Falling through the Vortex! But heading for where…?

The Tardis lurches, CAMERA SHAKE! The Doctor running around the console, feverish, levers, buttons, switches, then –

Bump! Landed! The Doctor runs to the door, heading out –

(The rest of the episode then plays out as normal, save for a slight dialogue alteration where the Doctor asks the young urchin if he’s seen the Cybermen.)

Just listening to the music alone makes me remember how much I used to love this show. Muchly preferred the used ending though

I wish they kept that in as i loved where they did it with the Runaway Bride with Donna appearing at the end and with the Titantic crashing into the TARDIS. It have us that moment of The Doctor lifes is constantly moving and a little sneak peak to christmas

That would've been a real shock for the Doctor and the viewers if that actually happened.
