When a King Tiger Was Rammed by a Sherman

When Lieutenant John Gorman of the 5th Guards Armoured Brigade was riding on board the Ballyragget, near the village of Cagny in Northern France, he was confronted by a group of German tanks including the feared Tiger 1 and the King Tiger. He would later write in his book about the encounter, “It was horror personified.”

Determined to take down the King Tiger but knowing that the gun of his Sherman is near useless against it, Gorman turned to his driver and ordered “Ram it!”

I like how the driver doesn’t even question why he’s gotta ram the tank.
He just goes. I like his attitude.

Just imagine the crew reaction to hearing the commander announce their going “ramming speed”

There is one small detail missing from this: During the initial flight from the Sherman's wreckage, Gorman's assistant driver, one James Baron, jumped into a trench, thinking his crew was there. Instead, it was actually the Tiger's crew, who glared at him, so James saluted them and ran off to join his own crew.

Edit: I've been informed that it was not Gorman who did this cheeky feat, but his assistant driver, James Baron, God rest his soul.

The armour penetration scene was unbelievably high quality. Well done!

Gorman: "See that King Tiger?"
Gunner: "Yes, sir"
Gorman: "I don't want to"
Gunner: "But sir our guns are ineffec-"
Gorman: "I was talking to the driver"

It’s always nice to hear about a veteran that lives for a long time and not die due to something unfortunate

The funny thing is that just before the encounter the sherman commander told his crew that “the best way to stand a chance against German heavy tanks is to use naval tactics”.

1:17 Tiger II actually used a modified version of 8.8cm PaK 43 L/71 anti tank gun while Tiger I’s 8.8cm gun was a derivative of 8.8cm Flak 36 gun. There was a huge performance difference between them.

5:50 I love the fact that they accurately exhibited the AP projectile, as well as the animation of the shell piercing the hull with the interior looking sharp and well designed making it a whole different view as to how far yarnhub has progressed in making videos both educational, and with badass animation.

I was a bit suspicious about how true this story was, but there's actually pictures of his Sherman and the Tiger 2! what really surprised me is that it wasn't any normal Tiger 2, it was one with the original turret before it was redesigned

Edit: basically the Tiger 2 had the Krupp Early turret, also known as the porche turret, this is rare as most of the turrets were salvaged instead of being used as they were replaced by the Krupp Production turret, also known as the Henschel turret

I like how tankers were taught that ramming was a bad idea
Yet this guy without hesitation yells “RAM IT!”

Damn, those shell animations at 3:30, 5:50 and 7:05 are IMPRESSIVE!!

It really makes me wonder what software you use. It almost looks like a game engine!
