The inline 6 is naturally well balanced. A 3.5 L, inline 6, "normally aspirated", pumping out 470 HP and it revs to 9000. That is a hell of an engine.

M1 ProCar has to be one of the best sounding racecars ever made

That $60, 000 for the road car in 1980 is the equivalent of $227, 000 in today's market

Couple of fun facts:
The reason why M version of 1 series if called 1M instead of M1 like any other M car (M2, M3, M4, M5) is because this car used M1 name.
M1 was supposed to be built by Lamborghini. That's why road legal version has two BMW logos on the back because M1 looked like Lamborghini's of that era (like you mentioned at 11:45).
New XM SUV is the only BMW that has two BMW logo's on the top part of back window like the M1 did.
Version of M88 engine from M1 was also used in E24 635CSi and E28 M5, the first ever M5.
M1 and i8 are only mid engined sports cars made by BMW.
It was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, one of the most famous automotive designer.
Some of the cars he designed are: Ferrari 250 GT, DeTomaso Mangusta, Maserati Ghibli, Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT, VW Golf Mk1, DeLorean, Alfa Romeo 159, , Alfa Romeo Brera, Lancia Delta, Lancia Thema, Lotus Espirit, VW Karmann Ghia, 1st gen VW Passat, Fiat Panda, Fiat Uno, Fiat Punto.
He also designed Iveco buses and vans.

In the 80's BMW gave us this. Now look what they're turning out. The M1 looks and sounds fantastic. Absolute dream car.

When I was young in the 80s, the M1 was already a legend, you only knew it from TV and magazines... you never saw it on the street.
Then, as an electrician apprentice, I had to re-install an apartment's electrical system in the neighboring town... and there was actually a white M1in in the yard.
That day I “coincidentally” had to constantly grab something from my work bus so I could sneak around the car every time.

Was lucky enough to see a road going M1 near Covent Garden in central London about 7 years ago. My friend and I geeked out on it for a good 20 minutes. Was a beauty

I remember taking my son to Spa Francorchamps 9.06 min watching classic car racing. I didn’t prepare him for the M1 and his first reaction to the sound and flames will stay with me for the rest of my life!

Inline 6, naturally aspirated, manual. It doesn't get better than that. Do you hear those induction sounds. I miss that so much in modern cars. Also the pop-lights on this car are so sweet. On looks alone though, the 635 csi is still my favourite BMW

A Brit here, love your reactions BTW, I’m on my 4th BMW and I love them, there’s something satisfying about driving them, yes they do drive better and my latest Beemer (as we call them this side of the pond) is a BMW 220d convertible, fantastic car….225hp, goes like a rocket, 155mph top speed and I get 60mpg!

Last weekend I just drove from Caen on the northern French coast at high speed (80-100mph) to the Cote D’Azur on the south coast of France (about 600 miles) on one tank full of fuel + they’re a real pleasure to drive………😊

At 8:08 the engine sound is even better than the exhaust sound. The engine note at 7, 000-9, 000 rpm (as the driver is either lifting or accelerating) is beautiful.

Best friend of this car is the BMW CSL ("Batmobil") widebody version from 70s with the same/similar engine.
From M1 was extreme widebody version, this was March BMW M1 with, V8 6.5 L Chevy small-block with 700 horsepower. This car compete in Group 5, Group 6, GTP, GTX and IMSA.

My brother's boss owned a BMW M1. He had a major engine breakdown (less than 30k km on the clock) and had to put it on a trailer and deliver it to the only garage who was authorised to repair it. He got the a new engine for free (50k German Marks). He sold it afterwards and got a Porsche 928.

In the 80s, I had a poster of the M1 in a rootbeer color in my bedroom. It might be what they call Valencia Orange color.

The M1 is the first BMW Motorsport, thé only one with central mid engine. Built in production in 1978. With inline 6 3.5L and 277hp. The M1 group 4 has 470hp, and the group 5 has 800hp with a turbocharged 😉

I always love seeing an M1 procar at a classic race. These are so insanely loud. No matter what other cars are on track, you always hear the M1 over all others. Hands down one of my favorite classic cars

I love the M1. I rode in one as passenger a couple times and also have driven one myself (civilian version...) I even sat in the driver seat of the Turbo X1 (the one in the museum...) 😅 which is not just a design concept, it's fully operational and driveable. It was built as a technology carrier / mobile lab vehicle and was the first BMW with ABS, and had revolutionary prototypes of first driver assistance systems. Only two ever built...

BMW really created an iconic and timeless design with the M1.

The automatic subtitles on YouTube register the engine sounds as [Music] 😊
Very true 👍

Some BMW M1 facts:
The design dates back to the BMW Turbo concept of 1972.
The M1 was developed to race in the World Sports Car Championship but the rules changed, rendering it redundant. F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone and BMW's motorsport head came up with the Procar concept as a use for the race car. However, teams did modify it to fit the Group 4 and Group 5 racing classes and the M1 actually had an extensive and successful racing career on both sides of the Atlantic, including Le Mans.
400 cars were built. As BMW didn't have the ability to build them in-house, manufacture was contracted to Lamborghini. But Lamborghini itself was the verge of bankruptcy and didn't have the resources and couldn't achieve the expected quality. BMW took the project back and the final batches were built by BMW Motorsport.
With 286hp, the road car isn't all that fast, even by the standards of the day. But it is, by all accounts, a delight to drive. The handling is pin-sharp and it's notably refined - you could easily do a very long day at the wheel.
Values are now around the $500k for a road car, maybe a million for a race car with good history.
There's one that raced at Le Mans in a livery created by Andy Warhol. That's probably worth high 8 figures, but it's highly unlikely to ever come onto the market.
