I'm not sure how much you eventually played, but it really picks up after act 2 when you get access to all the vendors, including the transmuter and spell vendor, and especially when you get to the mapworks. Between the pets, itemization (having requirements that can be paid for with level or stats), spell system, dynamic maps, etc., I just can't put D2 above it anymore. I played D2 to death and while I still love it and prefer its dark theme, in terms of gameplay TL2 is my favorite. I highly recommend anyone who wants to give it a try to keep with it until you get access to the mapworks. Also, the third and fourth acts are darker (but obviously not as dark as D2).

Modern games just don't seem to have the ability to capture the gloriously gothic feeling and the rich lore that Diablo 1 and 2 have. I mean I'm so disinterested in the stories (and worlds) inside newer games. And yes, I'm sure there are exceptions but I've yet to experience them. Seems as though the profit margin > the soul of the game these days.

The way that both torchlight games display items seems off to me. I don't like the glowing border of blue/purple etc, because it trivializes the item rather than like in d2 where it Looks like an item and not a token.

Torch2 is a really nice game. It have some really nice mechanics, like the pet and the different inventories. The story gets a little interesting as you go. The "New Game +" is like a "Normal > Nightmare > Hell" progression and you have rift like maps to go through once you finish off the campaign. Replayability is a little complicated because replayable is something that you like. Torch2 definitely have some options but it'll be bad if you don't like the game per se.

Dude..late comment. No game will never be like D2 and you know why? Because of the age. The first tow games that i've played on pc were D2 and Heroes 3 shadow of death and since then i cannot find a game too quence my thirst into looking for games similar to these ones that marked my childhood. So good luck în your quest because you will never find something similar thanks to these fucking corporations that are looking to make money fast speculating fools feelings. but i compared torchlight 2 with diablo 3, and i think torchlight is better

You can press 3 and right click at the same time, it´s a nice combo. The endgame was very repetitive for me. To be fair, it´s the problem of these types of games. Great game overall.

Look up Salan's SynergiesMOD for Torchlight2.
Vanilla-TL2 is a lot closer to D2 than D3, but *SynergiesMOD* became my next addiction after I found out that D3 was the Kid's Bop version of Diablo.

Only problem with the game was its eventually end-game, where you just farm only one area (Some tiny place in act2), and gear fast gear from that - But thats not even the biggest issue...Enchants and gems are better than gear :) I also think mods will turn away some people, since in T2 it's so easy to access and we'll...its cheating with no limitations. I like the game through :)

You should check out the the mods workshop for this game. Hundreds of mods to change up the game and make it better. Adds a TON of replay value.
