Diablo 2 is an ARPG hack-and-slash video game developed by Blizzard North and published by Blizzard Entertainment in 2000 for Microsoft Windows, Classic Mac OS, and macOS. The game, with its dark fantasy and horror themes, was conceptualized and designed by David Brevik and Erich Schaefer, who, with Max Schaefer, acted as project leads on the game. The producers were Matthew Householder and Bill Roper. The game was developed over a 3 year period, with a crunch time of 1.5 years long.

Set shortly after the events of Diablo, the player controls a new hero, attempting to stop the destruction unleashed by Diablo's return. The game's 5 acts feature a variety of locations and settings to explore and battle in, as well as an increased cast of characters to play as and interact with.

Diablo III, the sequel of Diablo II was released on May 15, 2012.

In 2021, Blizzard announced a remastered version of Diablo II, called Diablo II: Resurrected.

Diablo 3 is an ARPG developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment as the third installment in the Diablo franchise. It was released for Microsoft Windows and OS X in May 2012, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in September 2013, the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in August 2014, and the Nintendo Switch in November 2018.

Diablo 3 features seven character classes: Barbarian, Crusader, Demon Hunter, Monk, Necromancer, Witch Doctor and Wizard

An expansion pack entitled Reaper of Souls was released for PC in March 2014. It was released for consoles as part of the Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition version in August 2014. The Rise of the Necromancer pack was released for the Windows, macOS, and PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in June 2017. Diablo III: Eternal Collection, combining Reaper of Souls and Rise of the Necromancer, was released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in June 2017, and for the Nintendo Switch in November 2018.

The game received critical acclaim, although its always-on DRM feature was criticized. The game set a new record for "fastest-selling PC game" by selling over 3.5 million copies in the first 24 hours of its release, and became the best-selling PC game of 2012 by selling over 12 million copies. As of August 2015, the number of sales had grown to over 30 million. A sequel, Diablo IV, was announced in 2019 and is currently in development.

Hit the nail on the head regarding the lack of dark atmosphere in D3.
A lot of people compare the D3 storytelling & aesthetic to WoW, and I think that's pretty apt.

The biggest issue was the story.. You were just an adventurer going after the dark wanderer and you met so many interesting people along the way. I don't remember anyone from diablo 3 but I still remember so many people from Diablo 2

I agreed with everything you said except for one excerpt.

Around 6:20 you mentioned that in Diablo 2 you could just stand there and tank it. As someone who's dumped hundreds of hours into both games, I always felt like I was LESS tanky in D2. On Hell difficulty, even non rare mobs can kill you. Soul flayers and those lightning ghosts come to mind.

Actually I liked d3 build system. To be honest I rather have all skill unlocked and test loadouts in action than calculate every choice or even look for the builds in the net (to avoid mistakes) instead of having fun playing.

In D2 even in normal mode when you play with more than 1 player, your party could get annihilated, in D3 well basically you and your friends are gods among gods

Just played Diablo 2 resurrected, never played a Diablo title a day in my life but damn this is addictive and totally fits into the kind of stuff I like. The camera angle was always what through me off when I saw gameplay but now I don’t mind it at all.

D2 made me feel like I was going through a dark and epic story, every decision, every grind was important. Maybe that was just me being a kid but with D3 it made me feel like I was just…playing another game.

What I love about D3 on console especially is that you can play with a friend in co-op. Same screen, same joy and is great. The bad thing is that local co-op gameplay is abandoned by developers and it's a shame because the real fun started with this.

D2 endgame was Ubers, cow runs, PvP. But honestly, D2 was so good, I didn't really need any extra endgame content. I could just do baal runs over and over with others online, it was just that fun.

Diablo 3 doesnt feel like I’m actually playing a game, but rather it feels like I’m merely pushing buttons.

Great comparisons. I liked how you tied in Diablo 4 a bit as well.
Persistent online is a terrible idea. Removing it from D3 was a step forward. Making it part of D4 is a fail. When I buy a game I want to feel like I own it and can play it anywhere and how I want.

Forget clvl 99 in Diablo 2. If you manage to hit clvl 90 you are a very-very dedicated to this character. Everything above is pure insanity. I remember "cow level" grind for days for many hours every day in order to level up once around clvl 97-98.
Plan your build around clvl 70-80. Everything above is extra.
I love specific builds. The lack of easy re-spec is actually a boon. You invest in this character's build. I even name my character according to their planned builds.

It's not just about blood and gore. D1 and D2 look more realistic, more believable. The atmosphere and music play a big role and contribute to gameplay more than you'd initially think. Horror is the theme, darkness, exploration, adventure. D1 and D2 put you in the role of regular human trying to survive and save the world against all odds. You can feel that every step of the way. These two games don't hold your hand ever, and they don't picture you as this nephalem god-slaying chosen one character who knows he would save the world, the only question is when.

D3 ditched all that for the sake of speed, accessibility, quick and cheap fun, something you'd expect from a mobile game. The graphics are cartoony because all modern Blizzard games look cartoony. D3 is all about grinding for items. An extremely shallow and disappointing concept if u ask me. Even those items come down to just getting the full set that's current meta to even faster AOE everything. No role play, no adventure, no horror, nothing. They even ''replaced'' the horrendous campaign with bounties and rifts.

The biggest difference between D2 and D3 is the character build system: D2 has one.

I was and am so freaking DISAPPOINTED with Diablo3, i cant even find the words for it.
The cool dark Diablo franchise went into a low poly colorful, meaningless childs casual game.

D2 Resurrected Beta reminded me of why I love D2 to this day and what I hate about D3.

I did have a lot of fun with both games but if i'm being honest; I still play D2 from time to time 20 years later. Once I finished with D3 I didn't go back and haven't ever had the itch for it. Its hard for me to imagine a world where D3 will be a thing once D4 is released. Alternatively it seems like D2 will be with us forever.

I remember my Dad playing Diablo 1 and 2 often and me watching him play it. When I heard about resurrected, I was super hyped because now I can play something that was prevelant in my childhood.
